Default Closed Captions from a AJ-D455 with 1394

Can Edius encode closed captions from a Panasonic AJ-D455 deck with 1394 i/o? No editing involved, just tape in/file out. We export to file as a .mpg.

We're trying to encode some tape PSA's to an mpeg file but need the closed captions intact for the good ole FCC.

Thanks,
Jim

I'm afraid that to the best of my knowledge, EDIUS has no support of CC whatsoever. There was some talk of creating a module plug-in, but I have no idea if that's even happening.

In EDIUS as long as you don't apply any effects and the output is same as input it will pass the encoded CC information through to the output file (tested and confirmed in ver. 3.x and 4.x but not yet in 5).
Problem is that you are 'transcoding' from one format to another.
So the question is if the mpeg exporter is CC aware and will it use it to create appropriate streams? (I think mpeg uses streams... that I'm not sure).
My guess is that it will not...

MPEG uses subcodes for Closed Caption data and EDIUS won't feed the CC data to the MPEG encoder as the MPEG encoder is getting uncompressed video - the CC data is gone at that point.
