Here goes.
In its simplest form, the Mask is the SHAPE on the TOP Layer - lets call it Pic2
The alpha is what makes the rest transparent so that you can see the layer below Pic2.
I cant find a basic tutorial so...
Look at the attachment- draw a shape**** and drop transparency on one layer to 0% and then play with it. What is showing WHITE will be your layer below the mask.
Within the mask filter though, you can add video filters, Blurs mozaics colour correction etc. making it very powerful.

David Clarke did a tutorial that covered the mask with tracking. As with all DC tutorials worth watching
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCMXzWFdEdw

EDIT **** my shape is over a layer of RED but it could be any video/graphic layer.

Also in Mask, go to the Function button, click on it and check the top 2 options.

I guess it is possible to combine 2 masks or 1 mask with 2 shapes?
For example, i need a mask to look like a letter "O".
So i have to put a smaller circle into bigger circle and define that masking surface( or a hole) is part in between those circles.
I had onyle few minutes to try that, but i couldnt find a way to do it, so i am sure i was missing something..

Take a look at the video. I've shown you how to draw a circle and also how to modify that circle for your purposes.

This video only shows how to do a simple shape mask, a hole, not letter O or for example torus.

Jerry has made the effort to provide you with a video showing the basics of how the mask works, so it would be nice to thank him for that before asking for more help. Perhaps try experimenting, researching and checking out YT videos and you may find the answer you are looking for.

Bit harsh! I think he was just trying to follow up with Jerry the question about adding to or subtracting from a mask. Especially as English is perhaps not his first language.

Perhaps so in this case, but there seems to be people who expect others to help them but then forget to acknowledge their help.

Whether you are doing a zero or the letter O you will need to do what is shown in the video.
The video explains how to cut out the center between 2 elliptical shapes.
