1. Put your video clip on a higher track.
2. Then put the title directly underneath it on a lower track.
3. Go to Filters and under Keyers, grab the Track Matte effect. Drag and drop it to the keyer track of the video clip.
4. If you want a background instead of black, just put the background clip under the other two clips.

1. Create a title with QuickTitler: Characters white color.
2. Place that title in video-track 2V over clip in 1V.
3. Keyer > drag the effect chromakey to mixer-track of title > Doubleclick on chromakey in information-palette > click with pipette into white font > OK

Regards kurt
PS: You can also create a title with alpha (characters transparent).

Post-2's tip is more elegant than mine :-)

Not as versatile as others, but maybe the simplest:
  • Create title with white text (255) on a black background (0) and put it above the video.
  • From the Keyers select Blend->Multiply and drop it on the key portion of the title.
Done

The way it works: Where the title has color value 0, the underlined video is multiplied by 0 therefore no video is showing there.
Where the title color value is 255 (actually think of it like 255 = 1 and 128 = 0.5, 16 = 0.06, etc) then image value multiplied by 1 give you that value (image) and the same math principal applies for any other values (0…255 = 0.0…1.0).
If you want to experiment, see what happens when instead of black (0,0,0) background you use other gray values or color…
