Default Opinion on a New system Not sure on capture / preview card though

Hi all, Thanks for rendering an opinion on this...The spec is as follows

Coolmaster Cosmos II case
Asus X99-S ATX Main board
Asus GeForce GTX 970 Strix 4GB
Intel Core i7-5820K 3.30Ghz 15MB Cache
Corsair RM 1000W Modular 80+ Power supply
Corsair Vengeance 64GB LPX DDR4 Black 2400Mhz
Samsung 500GB SSD 840 EVO
Corsair Hydro H110 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler
4 X 3TB storage using 2 drives for removable backup on built in backplane
4 x 1 tb raid 0 with Rocket raid card

Not sure what card from black magic to use? I would like to have analogue
capture and HDMI output for preview.....

Regards

Cath

I was wondering why you were using a Rocket RAID card for RAID 0 when the motherboard already does RAID 0 and you have 12 SATA sockets on the motherboard. The Intel SATA sockets are split into a group of 6 and a group of 4, so you could put the 4 1TB drives onto the 4 socket controller and RAID 0 them in Windows, or if you want to use the built in Intel RAID then you could attach them to the 6 socket section and set it to RAID in the BIOS. That would still leave you the other 4 sockets in AHCI mode for your primary, optical drive and the 2 internal 3TB drives, and you could use the 2 Asmedia sockets for the external backplane .

As to which BM card to get, that would depend on what you need. If you want to be able to use 1080p50 or above then you have to be looking at one of the 4K cards.

Hi There - thanks for reply! I know force of habit from many years of building my edit machines and NOT trusting or more so not having any trust in the performance of the "On-Board" raid control cards, I may well be spending more than I need to on the additional card....Has the performance of these onboard cards changed? are they now as good as the Highpoint add in boards....?

I would appreciate anyone with an opinion on the core spec of the machine to reply......Need to pull the trigger on this

ASLO - I was going to use WIN7 PRO 64bit - For this system is this still the choice for new builds? or is win 8.1 64bit the way to go? I believe Win 10 is imminent and will be a free upgrade. - Wonder how that will effect all installed software and drivers?

Cath

An office computer to type some documents on you might consider upgrading O.S. (even that I don't)

A critical system like NLE or DAW you install from scratch.
You format the boot drive and go from there.

invest the time of a clean install and create an image of that for future cloning.

Windows 10 has yet to be released and proven stable, until then we might be at Edius 9 or later :)

HI Cath,
If you look in my specs that is somewhat similar to the system I just built. http://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/s...t=Build&page=3

I was in the same boat on the RAID setup and decided to not buy a RAID card. I use RAID 0 and then back up to s separate drive in case of RAID failure.

I have the Cosmos case in one build, but really like the Phanteks Luxe case with my new build and it is tailor made for your water cooling. I am running OC at 4.4 with that same water cooling and it purring like a kitten. I am sure I could go higher if I wanted.
http://www.phanteks.com/Enthoo-Luxe.html

The ASUS graphics card did not have quite as good reviews as some of the others.

Also, I don't think I would use 1T drives on anything when the 2T or 3T costs are so close.

I went with Win 8.1 (with Stardock Start8 running overtop to give me back the Start features) just so I could update to Win 10 when it comes out.

You would be surprised at the stability of Windows 10.

Indeed it's better than expected.........
what I actually ment to say is that we might need to wait for certification of various software including Edius to run perfectly on windows 10.

Thanks for your input!

I already have the four 1 tb drives and they are 7200rpm for the raid - a 4tb raid is way more than I need as most projects are less than 500 gig and I have only had 1 above 750 gig... The raid is a raid 0 and I too back up to another drive at the end of each day, or half day. So I have the original AVCHD on a drive then on the working eaid setup and backed up to a removable drive that drive stays in the box with the clients details and all other media and paperwork until client release.

A couple of questions for the collective ....

1. Win 7 64 pro or win 8.1 pro 64?

2. Go with on board raid on the Mobo or rocket raid card

3. Go with BM Intensity Pro 4K for analogue composite and s-video capture or something else?

4. Is the BM 4k card stable with both OS's? and in EDIUS now or are there any heads up I need to know

I would really appreciate some pointers on these questions please.

I shoot in HD1080i and encode for BD-r and SD-DVD pal for delivery. I use Tmpeg for much of the encoding and Procoder for some too (I still find it a very useful encoding application and its fast enough on my current 6 core machine.

I have Edius 7.xx now and intend to use it ; - ) along with viztitle....

Gone with 7 64 os

BM 4K card with noisy fan.....tut tut bm

I am going to put a raid card in this machine a 4 port raid for a raid 0 setup. I assume 4 x 500 gig SATA 6gbs drives in a raid setup with have a good performance.
