Default New PC for Edius 6

Hi

I know this is not an easy answer question, but I still try. :)

I would very much like a few inputs to help me decide if I shoul upgrade one of my workstations:

Currently I have i7 980X, 12 GB RAM

I am looking at i7 3930 with 16 GB RAM, SSD boot etc.

I know it will cost some $$$, but I have some money in my business I "need" to use before my fiscal year ends 12.31, so it is a positive sort of "problem" so to say.

I read some input in another thread reg. editing performance vs. encoding performance, and I would probably weigh editing performance higher, as you don't need to watch the PC encode.

Any input would be highly apreciated :)

Thanks

Ulf

As there is little to no stock of the 3930, get another 980x or 990x, to finish your budget, you already have a GV Elite right :)

Doubt so if the gains are that great if you compare this year and last year proc's.

Then again there are a few new cam's this year not, lenses .....
Oh boy, choices ...........

There is a 40% increase in cpu power compared to the lga 1366. If I had the X58 I would just stay with that for now.

I have been waiting for the X79 chipset because of the 40 pci-e lanes it has as well as PCI-E 3.0 support. Plus 12 cores and up to 64gbs of quad channel ram. If you go with 32gb of ram it is in the $160 range. Cheap compared to hard drives.
This might help you as well:
http://gadgetholic.net/core-i7-3930x...e-i7-990x.html
The big chip won't be out until Q4 and that is the answer to the current 990x.
SO with that and 40% increase on that with a PCI-E 3.0 video card, it will be sweet.

But if you are using Xeon systems I would definitely wait until those are released. The LGA 2011 consumer chips have 2 cores disabled. The thought is that the other two will be opened on Xeon chips later. So 16 cores on each chip.

Keep in mind that the 40% what they print on paper is achieved most likely with favorable bench marks, it's been all too often that real life gains are not that impresive, there are gains but not that wow, we shall see ......

I believe the increase is very close. It is not only the chip
but the quad channel ram and the pci-e lanes that are there.
George Dame has already delivered a few of these. The qpi is double that
of the lga 1366 chips in the extreme chips.

If it is indeed a 'package' deal improvement it well could be, cheers.
