Default Drive recognition problem

Hi

I have this irritation problem on one of my PC's.

I have 2 internal drives mounted inside. I have a tray, where I change the boot drive according to which software etc. I want to use, XP / win7 and different software installed.

Here comes the strange part: All boot drives will access the two other drives, except for one I recently installed. I can go to disk management and "import foreign disks" and they will be accessable for this boot drive but not for the others. The latest one is windows 7 and the others are mix for XP and 7.

Does anybody here have an idea? Should I reformat them or change the volume type?

Thanks for any input.

/Ulf

Are the by any chance green drives ?

I used to have many WD green drives, and besides being a bit slow, all working fine for a few months, then the trouble started.
All internal drives were mostly ok, externally almost all of them failed to be recognized often, also dying off fast.

Have since replaced them all with WD blacks and no more of those issues besides more than 10 percent of the drives failing, but that I think is due to a world wide quality issue mostly driven by cost & profit.

So far I seem to have best result as a HDD is formatted as primary, it could be mind fart but it almost feels as logical drives seem to take more time to get detected.

P.S. I still format my drives the old fashioned way, slow, full format, couple of hours for a 2TB drive.

How large are the drives? Windows XP (and Server 2000) supports only MBR volumes, and MBR volumes are limited to 2TB in size. Anything larger will be a GPT volume, which XP does not support (but XP 64-bit, Vista, Server 2K3, Server 2K8, and 7 do support)

Thanks Brandon. They are only 250 GB, so I don't think that would be the case anyway. I think I'll empy them onto my server and re partition and format them and see if that helps.

Do you know which type of disc I should use, basic or dynamic and then a simple volume?

Thanks.

For compatibility I use MBR, Basic. I've never seen the problem you describe. I'm curious what would cause this...

Brandon, I forgot to mention one thing. I can actually get the discs to work in the other configs by "importing foreign discs" and then they will work there, but not in the other configs - strange :)

I'll try and unload one and reconfigure it and report back

Thanks so far :)
