Default What do you think about Boris fx plugins ?

Hi there,

I watched some yt video, and these plugins seems really powerfull.
Unfortunately, there is not as much ressource for it than After Effects.

The idea to make vfx without going out of Edius is surely valuable, but how good is it ?

What's your opinion on it ?

Why don't you download the trial for Boris Continuum 10.0.3 OFX versions. Install it and it will show up in the OFX bridge. It will give you an idea how it works. I'm not sure if this is on the Edius approved list, but as far as I can tell the filters works pretty decently in Edius. There are still a couple of things that don't work properly, such as the position on screen of certain effects and the Title Studio. Try it for yourself.
Real time will depend on your system.

Also, Hitfilm Ignite 2017 is something to look at. This is a direct Edius plugin.

Hi Jerry,

I'm planning to try it this weekend, but any users feedback is always good to get, before spending a lot of time on something you're not sure is worthy :)

I tried Ignite from hitfilm, but the watermarks are too big, and make it impossible (for me) to gauge how good or bad it works.

The nice thing about Hitfilm is that it it also installs into AE and Premiere.
BCC OFX doesn't.

Who needs Premiere when Edius is right here ? :)

Anyway, I installed Boris red and did a quick test.
The UI is quite confusing, and performance are pretty bad, even tho my hardware is quite decent.
I'm sure it would be faster to export to AE, compose, and re-import to Edius, than render with Boris Red.
Also, I can see that Boris fx plugins have not been updated for years.
It doesn't smell like a smart invest.

There are some reasons to use Premiere over Edius.
Advanced audio workflow and animation quality are just two arguments.
Some more? OK: higher bit depth support, 4:4:4 color subsampling, better image sequence support, effect Handling (you see which effect ist applied).
Sure, this is not valid for everyones workflow and the rental system is the big show stopper.

Andreas

If you have AE and Premiere it was a plus for Hitfilm, I do have both. A lot of us use more than one NLE.
I mentioned BCC 10 and not Boris Red for a reason. Red is basically dead and BCC 10 is considered the replacement.
I did say the RT depended on your system.

It depends on what kind of effects you want. I actually use Boris continuum a lot, in particular the particle effects and light effects because that is what I need for the stuff I am doing. I can do pretty much the same thing in Ignite. None of them play very well in EDIUS and the keyframing is limited compared to how they can be keyframmed in After Effects.

Boris also has some nice drop out fixing filters for some old footage I use as well.

None of the time effects - optical flow slow motion etc - will work in EDIUS as plug-ins. It is just one limitation of how the EDIUS plug-in interface works.

Another option worth considering is buying HitFilm Pro 2017. That will give you the stand-alone program you can do a lot more complicated effects work in, and also get the EDIUS plug-ins.

Ok I understand, but in this case, why are you still use Edius ?
Is it not kinda redundant to use two NLE ?

I didn't know that, and Boris still sells it as as undead product.

I spent the night on the BCC 10 trial with Edius, and it's interested as it adds some essential filters (like directional blur) which can be animate, but unfortunately not very well optimized.
Some filtets don't work, and others can't be fast rendered.

I donwloaded again the Ignite plugins, but their fullscreen watermark is just nonsense.
But, that's their choice...
