Hello Ron

Blank timeline, Blank Bin

I have just checked on system 4 which is a little unfair because there are 64 logical cores active over 2 Xeons. So total load of CPU1 is 0%, CPU0 is 0.8% that Edius is using.

If I try some probably invalid maths multiply 0.8 by 32 (cores) and divide by the probable number of 8 logical cores you have that equates to 3.2% in your case not 18-20% so I don't understand that 20% at all. That of course is assuming that workload is distributed evenly across all cores and looking at the performance values it isn't. So that is invalid.

Putting the performance monitor up I get core 16 at 64% and core 22 at 100% with Edius loaded, and they are constantly on all the others at 0 or 1%.

If we now try some new maths and take the average usage as 82% over 2 cores and multiply it up to 8 logical cores we divide by 4 and hey presto that's 21% as the CPU total load.

Is any of that logical or is it rubbish? If it isn't rubbish then your 18% isn't out of court.

Mike

OK the waveform monitor causes core 16 to be 64% turning it off that core goes to zero.

The effect window closed releases core 22.

So there are the two culprits.

Well tried all the same things Mike. What I see is that there is always one core at 100%. When it goes to zero another one is at 100%. Doesn't matter if I switch off waveform monitor ( which is normally part of my desktop ) or any of the effects or other windows. Total CPU use is always 6% or more. With Resolve or Vegas it is 0 % on all 12 cores with empty project. With one core at 100% and a small intermittent system use on other cores the 6% total is understandable. Not sure if the switching between cores is driven by EDIUS, Windows or AMD. However it is clearly initiated by EDIUS as it does not happen with the other programs.

On EDIUS 8.53 I can get CPU down to 3% by turning off waveform monitor and there are no cores at 100%. Have repeated this a few times now and EDIUS 9.5 always has one core at 100%. But it keeps switching cores with no action on my part. Can sit and watch it go from core 6 to core 9 to core 11 etc. Very puzzling.

I just tried my rather older HP XW8600 with dual 4 core Xeon which are not hyper threading CPU's so there I only have 8 cores.

That also has the RXE1 old GV hardware and the performance monitor sits at 12% for edius.exe 8.53 WG with no changes in usage with W/F monitor on/off or audio mixer on/off or effects pallet on/off. So that stays constant.

Different from 9.5WG isn't it?

That's very odd the CPU core hopping you are seeing whether that is different because it is the i series of CPU rather than Xeons I don't know but it does look like the coders have created a bit of a strange issue here.

For my situation the CPU usage is definitely EDIUS and not something else. Using either Task Manager or Process Explorer you can see the CPU usage of specific applications. If it was indexing or something else it would show those apps as the culprit.

I just tried EDIUS on a Surface Book 2, Core I5. It is a fresh install. Created a blank project and EDIUS uses very little (what I would expect CPU) if left to be idle.

When I do encoding I set EDIUS to have only the time line and the main window open. With those open it still uses 20% CPU sitting idle.

I found the culprit. I have a Decklink Mini Monitor. If set EDIUS to the Generic OHCI - output then CPU goes to 1% load when sitting idle.

EDIUS 9.5 seems to have a similar problem. If I switch to not using the Decklink I get expected low CPU usage. When it is enabled it fluctuates but whenever I switch to another application it will start going to about 20% CPU usage.
