Default New graphic card? replace nvidia gt230

Hi, Since few weeks I have some problems with my pc and edius. Everytime the pc got stuck when I am on second Fullscreen or during just playing a movie. Sometimes I can go on but sometimes edius shuts off and I must restart after a notice that there was a kernel problem with the graphiccard. Now I hope that a new and better graphic card will solve this problem. But what kind of card do I need. I have edius 6.5 on a HPE pavilion120 corei7 cpu860@2.80ghz. Does anyone has a good advice?

As farcas I know, the nvidia gtx 660 should give good "bang for the buck".

I have the 670 but I have an i7 3930 cpu.

I don't know if a new card will solve your problem, though - maybe someone else can chime in too.

Thanks Ulf. I first thought about the gtx 550 but maybe it's too light.
I indeed hope that the problem will be solved but I'm not sure. I even thought it's a problem related to cooling and temperature. Don't know yet. I''m glad with any advice.

What is your budget for a card? This would help in being able to steer you in the right direction. Also, do you use Adobe products?
Whether or not getting a new card will fix your issue is the question.

If you can go up a little you could get the 660ti, which has a tad more power than the standard 660.

As far as your system:
How long has it been since you started with a fresh install? Do you have a clone of your system?
If it is an HP you should have a restore disc that wipes the drive and builds it back to the day you bought it.

Before buying anything I would clean the system out and reinstall the programs that you use. Make sure to deactivate Edius and any other programs that require that action.
Put the latest drivers in for your current video card and then give it another go.
If it works, you saved yourself some money. If it doesn't, there is something else going on. There is no need spending money before trying other things first.

Thanks Jerry, maybe you are right. But In nov 2012 I already did a full clean and a new install of windows, but already before thattime I had some problems with the stability. I can give it another try but I think a new graphic card will increase the performance. I'll think it over and will keep the 660ti in mind.

Don't expect miracles with a new graphics card. Yes, you will get some improvement, but upping your processor and ram and graphics card will give you the best boost. But, at that point, you might as well buy a new system.

Hi, last nigh I checked the temperature of the gt230 card and I noticed something remarkable. Temp was about 76 C degrees *in starting position. When I left the pc alone the temp rises in about 4 mines to 90 degrees while no program is running. Not edius, just windows. *When I then touch the mouse the screen flickers, went black for 3 seconds and the temperatures decreases rapidly back to 76 in 1 minute.* While playing a movie in VLC the same happens, temp rises to 91 C degrees, and thatís only while playing a movie from hdd. I touched the mouse, screen went black, movie flickers and went on. It seems that the temperature of the graphic card is the problem. What do you think? Does anyone else finds this remarkable and does this mean that the card is not working right?

The earlier models always ran hotter. However, at idle, that temperature should not be that high.
There may be something wrong with your card. Is the fan still running on it?
