Default Chroma Key

Any recommendations for third party Chroma key software?

Thanks in advance,

First off, I have all of these items installed.

1. New BlueFX Chroma Key Pro:

Pros:

The cost is at or under $100.

Is really good for talking heads

Real Time with a good graphics card.

Cons:

Doesn't handle subject motion very well.

Getting fine details, such as hair, is a problem Hair is seen
as a 'clump' of hair rather than individual strands.

Not a definite single click keyer.

2. Robuskey:

PROS:

Excellent single click keyer.

Excellent with fine details such as hair.

Realtime with the right system.

Handles motion of subjects well.

CONS

The price is quite high at $427, especially with other products on the
market.

Availability in certain areas is spotty at best.

After many reports to ISP Robuskey in Japan concerning noise in black areas, nothing has been done to fix it. There are work arounds to reduce the noise
but it would be nice to have it fixed.
ISP Robuskey says there is no issue with black noise in Robusy

HITFILM IGNITE PRO

PROS:

Is a very capable keyer.

Has Spill Suppression.

CONS:

Cost could be an issue for some. It's $199
This is in a package with a lot of effects included. This is the cheaper of the
two effects packages in this list.

Realtime playback may be an issue for older machines.

The chroma key popup control panel has an issue with staying on top when using dual monitors and full screen video on the second monitor. In my case, it is the Intel GPU controlling the second monitor.

Boris Continuum 2019.5:

PROS:

Works in 10bit by way of the OFX Bridge

IMHO has the best single click keyer out there.

The fact that it is in Continuum also gives you Chromakey Studio and Primatte Studio with a bevy of controls. There are also chokers and a luma key.

Also, this is a major effects suite.

CONS

Cost is the main con. If you are after 1 single effect, Continuum is not for you. If you are after a full fledge effects package, the money is worth it.

Certain effects do not work within Edius. This is due to Edius and not Boris. If you need those specific effects, Continuum works very well in After Effects.

All of these options plug-in to After Effects and opens up the 'time' effects that won't work within Edius.

Download the trial for each option and weigh the pros and cons for your particular workflow. If money is a problem, either NB Chromakey Pro or Ignite Pro 4.0 will be your cheapest options.

As I said before, Continuum's keyer suite is by far the best out there....but for a price. Not all of the wizbang effects will work in Edius. You have to weigh that out as well.
I have been a proponent for Robuskey since it's release. As far as quality goes, Robuskey and the Continuum keying suite are very comparable.
However, with Robuskey at $427 and Continuum at $695 including all of the other effects, it becomes a no-brainer.

Boris Red working in Edius 9, it has a capable keyer as well. It isn't as good as the Continuum keyer, but it will do. Also, it won't be realtime.
Anything is better than the Edius native keyer.

Great list, Jerry.

I use Hitfilm Ignite Express (Free) with very good results. You don't need Pro version for chroma key. Just saying :)

Boris FX also sell BCC Units. These are single units from the complete continuum packet.
This unit might be worth considering.

PS. BorisFX do not support their products in EDIUS, but as Jerry said, many of the functions will work through the OFX Bridge.

The problem with the Key Unit is also price. It's $399 for a new license. Just like Robuskey Edius users will be hard pressed to pay $399 for a single effect group. Especially, with Ignite Pro providing a full FX package for $199.

However every part of the Key unit works properly within Edius 9 by way of the OFX bridge.

As I said in my earlier post, download the trials and test them for yourself.

Not exactly $399.
Some units are $399.
Primatte Studio is $299
Also, if you are coming from Boris RED or AvidFX, you could try asking if there is any sort of discount available. Not sure you will get one, but they tend to be kind.

Thanks for your list Jerry. I have a current project with a greenscreen and I was going to buy a keyer but decided to try my Boris Red plugin. In combination with the layouter which is acting like a garbage matt, I am getting good results. But, what I learned is shooting, keying and rendering in 4k makes a lot of stuff look good! This current project is in 1080p so the 4k rendered HQX file on a 1080p timeline is the trick.

I am posting this just to say to experiment which might lead to good enough results with some existing items you own.

But having said that - rendering a 4k key is quite a load... Realtime would be nice but I have stopped expecting anything in 4k with some processing to be realtime. :)
