Just doing my first MPEG4 after upgrading to version 9.5 Workgroup from V6.
Looks like render times are quicker? A 35 minute timeline is taking 18 minutes or is it that 50P takes double the time than 25P? |

50p will definitely take longer. I don't think it would be twice as long. That would depend on the CPU and settings.

Hey Jerry what do you know about file size when comparing 25P to 1080P?
Also when making an MPEG4 do you go variable or constant bit rate. I've just done a 1920 1080 25P constant @ 9MEG. The edit is of a dance concert, shot wide in ök" lighting. I've just now put another render on but gone variable and are going as 9 being the lowest and 14 being the highest. I wonder how Edius" deals with it and if or not it really matters. If I wanted to improve the quaility then maybe 14 constant would be best? Thanks for any tips you have. Martin. |

Martin, 25p is a frame rate and 1080 is a resolution. The faster the frame rate the smoother the motion will be. The higher the resolution the clearer the image will be, even after a down convert.
IMHO, choosing a bitrate is determined by size requirements, delivery mode, quality of the actual video, motion in the video, and intended output quality. In some cases, a single pass encode may not be enough to get a good quality output with a low bitrate. Edius doesn't have a dual pass option, but TMPGE has the AVC plug-in that does have a dual pass option. When you get into the lower bitrates you will need to test what works for you. It's not always a 'one size fits all' scenario. The biggest space saver would be a dual pass variable encode. If size isn't an issue I always use constant. I'm doing more H.265 outputs through NVENC and Mastering Works 7. I don't have the H.265 QS option on my system. NVENC allows me to speed up either H.265 or H.264 files by leveraging the horsepower of my GPU(1080ti). I use constant on these exports. You just have to experiment to determine what works best for you.
