If I cancel the auto create of the audio waveforms when I load clips onto the timeline. How oh HOW can I get Edius to create them at a later time?

And no I'm not going to go into the properties on each of 100 clips to click refresh.

Try contracting each of the audio tracks. Close the project. Open the project. Expand the audio tracks. Not sure if you really need to do the contracting/expanding, but if you simply close it then reopen it and it doesn't work, try it.
