Default Burn to Disk Problem

I use Edius (version 9.4) as a hobby to make (PAL) movies of family holidays.

When I go to "burn disk" I have selected DVD which shows format at 720x576 50i and Project Settings 1920x1080 60p. When I click on Create Disc I get a message as follows:

"The output will be converted to the selected format. Format conversion may affect the quality of the image. Do you wish to continue? So I thought that I would change the project settings to 720x576".

I selected "Settings/Project settings" which brings up "Presets List" but there is only "Current Settings" listed. The setting shows Frame Size 1920 x 1080; aspect ratio 16:9 and frame rate (greyed out) 60.00. So I changed the frame size but cannot change the frame rate because it is greyed out. (I am also wondering if I have greater problems since there are no presets for me to select).

When I go back to "Burn to Disk", under the basic tab the Project Settings is still shown as 1920x1080 60p. (Somehow when I started this project I selected 60p since the video is coming from a Samsung Mobile phone that took the video at 60 fps).

I have not used Edius for some time and am at a loss as to what to do to best burn the project to PAL DVD.

Several things going on here.

60p is not a pal framerate, it is NTSC. It is actually probably 59.94p. 50p, and 50i are pal framerates.

Edius can not change the framerate of a project once it is created. You can change just about everything else.

If you shoot a pal framerate, edit a pal framerate, not an ntsc framerate.

DVD does not support 50p and 60p, so they have to be converted. DVD does support 50i and 59.94i

BernH many thanks for your help. I only just started this project and tried to write disk just to make sure everything was setup OK. I will restart the project and consult the manual for the proper paramaters.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to convert footage taken on iPhones and Samsung to PAL standard (25 or 50 frames). While the conversion works - the results are terrible to look at for me - the video is very soft and some parts are jittery. Not much of a choice here.

Hi Anton,

Nope - no rotation whatsoever. It was a straight "load into timeline" - and even before doing anything - when I played it back - it was already very soft". Playing back the native file from iphone is much better. But we are PAL territory. I tried 25 frames and 50 frames - both are equally bad.

Resolution - I don't recall. But - frame rate was 30 frames.

Timeline = 25 frames (PAL standard)

I don't burn to DVD or Bluray these days - convert to MP4 and pass them the MP4 files to view on PC.

you don't recall resolution? I mean was the phone clip HD or UHD or SD?

if the timeline resolution matches, quality should be fine providing you set optical flow, because phone frame rate is totally against any video standard in the world, typically 30.3fps

It was given to me (from an iPhone 3 - so I guess it will be just HD). When I played it back using VLC - it looks fine. When I load it into timeline and play it from there - all the sharpness went south. Let me go back and try to retrieve the footage - if I still had it on my computer.
