AVI is just a container format. Would be interesting to now the exact video and audio codec details.

You can use MediaInfa (free) to analyze:
https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

Can you do that with one of your AVI files and provide the result?

HQ and HQX AVI files will not play in the new Windows movie player even with the codec pack installed. They will play in the old Windows Media Player. I suggest you not send out files using the HQ or HQX codec. If you do, suggest that your recipient install VLC Media Player which does play HQ and HQX files using its' own internal codecs.

I know AVI's created with Edius won't play on a machine that doesn't have edius unless you install the codec, HOWEVER I have installed edius 9 after removing Edius 8, and videos previously created are saying 'file is not supported'

they will import fine into edius, but they won't play on Windows

I know the option of finding the GV codec and installing it is there, but should I have to do this when I have edius 9 installed?
usually, Media Player Classic will play anything, I really don't use Windows Media Player

download the 64bit installer version https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/

once installed, right click an avi and choose open with, MPC won't be listed so you need to browse for it in Program Files

repeat the same for all video file types, even mp4, mov, mpg etc.

Exactly what I asked above.

That's an interesting development. Thanks for the info Lew

I am still on Windows 7 myself, but like Anton, I use MPC instead of the built in Media Player. I have however recently switched to MPC Black Edition as my go-to, (I like the GUI a bit more). https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpcbe/ ,but still have the regular MPC as well.

I tried the Black Edition and did not like it because it opens all movies in a small window, whereas MPC Classic opens each movie at the pixel dimension the video was shot

Today I updated windows 10 on my slightly older boot drive with edius 9.3 on it for capturing work, indeed windows 10 media player can't play the old files so it's a windows thing again...

MPC's plays it fine, that player always seems to just work.
Been using that for ages, best player out there.

I know, but I don't want full screen, I want exact pixels with no scaling

I am using a 2560x1600 monitor and I do not want a 1280x720 file to open full screen, but rather at 1280x720

It doesn't do that for me but there is a setting to open at the native resolution. I had to dig for it a bit, as it isn't enabled by default. I'll have a look at it this evening and post a screen shot if I can find it again.

Here is the setting in MPC-BE that automatically opens to native size.

Player>Window Size>After Starting Playback>Scale to video size>100%

See attached screen grab.
