Default New System Specs

Wanted to get input on this system im thinking of putting together. Ill be mainly shooting xavc format, with some 4K as well.
Input and suggestions welcome.
Intel I7 8700k
Gigabyte Z370
Corsair 32gb, (2 16s) 2666mhz
Samsung 960 EVO 500gb OS
2 WD 2tb Black
Corsair 450D Tower
Corsair cx 750M power supply
Cooler Master Hyper 212
Windows 10 Home
Gigabyte GTX 1050 ti

Id like to be able to get more than one layer of 4k editing,
I know itll handle the xavc l no problem

Hi Jim!

One of my PCs is with 8700K. It's the best CPU for editing with Edius in my opinion. I can edit 5 layer multicam UHD 25p 8bit from Panasonic GH5 in realtime. Thanks to Quicksync and higher clock speed.

My obs are:
- 250GB M.2 Samsung for OS drive is enough.
- get a second SSD for cache and export.
- 2 SSD in RAID0 for VIDEO drive and one HDD 4TB or larger for DATA
- Noctua NH-D15 for cooling (check if the case is OK for this cooler)
- Windows 10 PRO

The Intel i7-8700K is faster than your Intel i9-7960X system for editing? Could you please make a test to compare those two solution? I am thinking about new system for Edius and your advice is surprising me. i7 is much more cheaper than i9 processor.

Did you overclock the 8700K dvpro?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. I have a delided the CPU and OC to 5GHz (check der8auer on YouTube for OC). It helps with the temp. But not much gain in Edius. Just for my ego :)

Ahoji!

Sorry for taking so long to answer you back.

You can find many tests on the forum comparing i9, Threadripper and i7 Coffe Lake.

From my experience - multicam events with Panasonic GH5, documentary with Canon C100 and 5DMKIV, GoPro and DJI footage, the best CPU is i7 8700K.
Main benefits: high clock freq, QuickSync and price.
Disadvantages: max 64GB RAM, 16 PCI Express Lanes

Hope this info is useful for you.

It needs to be made very clear that you are talking about using 8bit 25p files.
These are a far cry from 10bit 59.94p files. If HDR is included, the draw on the system will be quite extensive.

The 8700k@5GHz might be able to do 1 layer of 10bit 60p with HDR, but past that I'm not so sure.

So Jim, keep that in mind.

Sorry Jerry my answer was for Miro #3, not for Jim. For Jim I made it clear in post #2 "5 layer multicam UHD 25p 8bit from Panasonic GH5 in realtime".

For 3 month I had 3 PC config with the latest CPU tech: i7 8700k, i9 7960X and Threadripper 1950X. For my personal experience working in Edius:

1. Forget AMD. Lots of bugs, no optimization in Edius
2. i9 7960X is 4 time the price of i7 8700K but the performance is not even double; no h265 export; buy it for 3D work - Maya, Cinema4D etc
3. i7 8700 my favorite for high clock freq, QuickSync and price
