Thanks for the advice! My GV-D200 deck does all three, as well, but I wasn't sure about the pass-through quality with firewire. I will test that the next time I get some Video8 or Hi8 cassettes to convert.

The manual for my unit indicates a menu setting for A/V to DV-firewire output for video capture, internally or from another analog deck for pass-through.

I suspect the DCR-TRV750 camcorder and the GV-D200 deck have similar or the same playback capabilities, as they were both made by Sony, although the latter is a little newer, and both are now only available second-hand.

I do not know the capabilities of your mac. But one multi-step method would be to feed the audio from your cassette player and any available SD video signal to the ADVC, capture it as a DV file (e.g., an AVI) and then demux the file it to extract the audio, or load the file into a NLE and then save the audio only to a new file.

I have done footage from Hi8 using a digital 8 deck and through an NX and other hardware. I thing the footage through digital 8 is a little sharper with less colour bleed than the SVIDEO.

The Digital 8 deck was not perfect, however, I also occasionally saw a kind of "cross hatch" pattern on some of the reds and I did get the occasional "DV bleep" using the digital 8 deck.

The difference was not huge so if it means doing lots of stuff again I probably would not bother. I was very "picky" because that is what we are these days, with hidef and 4K footage. Compared to that all variations of standard def look awful ;-)

In answer to the OP, if your laptop has USB3 a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle may work (although those have been picky about the kind of USB chipset so you may not know if it works until you try it). That would let you capture in decent quality directly in to EDIUS.

My Sony TRV-480 Camera, also does all three. I do use the unit to transfer 8mm, Hi-8 and Digital 8, by fire-wire. Works great.
