Default EDITING UHD in 59.94P or 59.94i

Good morning all,
Just getting into UHD editing with EDIUS. Seems to be a world of difference for final result. Query:
I've been shooting HD at 29.97i and p for years. Edits just great - the mp4 outputs are super.
Now, into the question of UHD(3840x2160) - whether to shoot and edit in 59.94p or 59.94i with the new Canon XF400. Haven't output yet, and surely need to upgrade my 5-year old editor to handle most. But - for you experts in UHD, which I am not, which (and why) format yields the best UHD final output to thumb drives or direct to UHD sets and projectors and eventually UHD-DVD's - i or p.
Would appreciate your input before doing too much more dramatic and travelogue shooting and EDIUS editing.
Many thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan,
UHD 59.94p is the best you are going to get.
Here's the problem. Your system is underpowered for that resolution and frame rate.
In Edius, 59.94p smooth playback with filters and multiple layers(3-5) is pretty much a unicorn at this point. We haven't reached the HD performance equivalent on UHD as of yet.
You may have experienced this already.

You do have options:

In WG you can drop the resolution to at least 1/2(maybe 1/4) to get smooth playback.

You can also start the project in UHD 59.94p and then change the actual project setting to 1920x1080 59.94p.
When finished, you simply return to the original UHD 59.94p project settings for export.

You can also use proxy files to do your edit.

I don't know if transcoding to HQX would give you much better playback that the Canon files. You should try just in case.

UHD 59.94p smooth playback with filters and multiple layers comparable to HD performance, is still a couple of chips away.

Your system is two chips behind my 4790k. I can get around some of the pitfalls because of two reasons. 1. I have my chip overclocked. 2. Edius WG has the playback resolution drop down.
If you are looking for a system, the i9-9900k is a very good chip for use with Edius.

I think UHD is only progressive so little choice. I have not found a disc authoring consumer level program yet either so all output is to HD BLuray for me. I shoot with two GH5's UHD 60P but edit in a 1920x1080 progressive project which is fine on either my 4790K system or the Threadripper system both have EDIUS 8.53 installed as a backup for each other. But with WG and at 1/2 playback preview resolution, certainly in multicam.

I have the same CPU as you and shoot in UHD 50p (PAL land) and edit in a 1920x1080i project, as I mostly output to DVD. I use (large) proxies and it looks pretty good to edit with. In multicam with 1 mp4 UHD cam and 2 or 3 AVCHD cameras, I may have to drop resulution to half once filters are added, but never quarter. I reckon you could get by with proxies and maybe a resolution drop if only using 1 UHD camera in a HD project and then change to UHD for export, if desired.

I agree

and when PC technology finally catches up to 4k requirements, it will be way too slow and under powered for 8k

meanwhile, I am a happy HD person :)

Try that in a 3840x2160 59.94p 10bit project using 10bit 4:2:2 files. You will choke big time.

Haha. Yes, I'm sure, but only using 8 bit for now.

The camera Alan is using does UHD 59.94p 4:2:2 files. That's why I posted it that way.

I now realise that, Jerry. I missed that point at first. No problem.

Look Here:

There is a trial.

Here is a screen shot from a BD playback on VLC of a UHD title made in DVD FAB UHD Creator. This was a time lapse video. Playback is on my computer monitor @ 1920X1080. Look at the Media Infor screen shot for the actual specs.
