Question Edius 8 Pro vs. Workgroup Questions ...

Just been reading over the differences and a few things are still unclear to me, can someone shed some light perhaps ...

1) DNxHD it lists as an "Option" ... what does that mean exactly? Also, it makes no mention of Pro-Res support (for either) ... what is the case there?
2) Same for Dolby-Digital? Can you still export AC3 when exporting MPG2 elementary streams?
3) What is "Audio monitoring mode" ? *
4) What is "loudness monitoring" ?
5) Edius watch folder? So they are removing a feature?

Thanks,
Tim

* Just dawned on me ... They don't mean the meters that have been in Edius for many generations now, do they? Surely they mean some kind of hardware support or something??

and to explain audio monitoring mode, it is part of EDIUS 7.5 and EDIUS 8WG and lets you listen to all channels of a 5.1 or 7.1 setup or any other setup via PC stereo out, it is a simple switch on the VU meter at top right

the loudness meter is also part of 7.5 and E8 WG and lets you set audio levels for broadcast

none of the above are available in EDIUS 8 Pro

Thanks, Anton! Ok, so if you don't already have Edius 7.x you aren't really losing anything new. Oh, but what about Avid (DNxHD), ProRes, and Dolby Digital support?

Thanks,
Tim

Here's a screen shot of the audio monitoring for a 5.1 setup.
Audio Monitoring.png
If you look to the right side of the panel you will notice individual presets listed. This allows you to listen to a 5.1 sound track with just a 2 channel speaker system. The difference is you can here each channel out of both speakers.
This is more of a broadcast tool with crossover functionality for long form editors.

Whether you are using Pro or Workgroup you can have all 3 of the items you mentioned........albeit a variation on the theme, but usable.

1. DNxHD is provided in Workgroup as a native export. This is listed in the exporter under MXF and is created as a DNxHD MXF file.

You can export DNxHD from either version by loading the Avid codecs and using Quick Time to export the file. If Media Info is to be believed, QT export will produce a 10bit file. I'm a little skeptical of the 10bit thing, but with native export, it really doesn't matter.

2. Prores support is no different than what you had in Edius 7.5.

3. Dolby Digital Professional support is a paid option for Workgroup and is not offered for Pro.
Both will create a 5.1 ac3 file, but the paid option is the official Dolby Digital product. This is a $500 option, AFAIK.
You will have to check with the license if this will allow you to post the DD logo on your discs. I know there are restrictions, so definitely check before labeling your product.

You can still export multi channel ac3 files with either version of Edius. Nothing has changed in that respect.

THANK YOU, Jerry, for that detailed and concise explanation. Exactly what I wanted to know (and thankfully pretty much what I wanted to hear) save for one thing ...

Regarding DNxHD ... I was actually more interested in support for IMPORT in Edius 8 Pro. Any issues importing, or is it the same as (I understood) with exporting ... as long as you have the codecs and QT?

And just to clarify, if you did want to export DNxHD with Pro, the difference would be, instead of just choosing DNxHD, you would have to choose Quicktime and then DNxHD as the "codec" of the QT wrapper, no?

Thanks,
Tim

To export:
In Workgroup you choose MXF>DNxHD.
In Pro you choose QuickTime and then select DNXHD for your codec.
Load the Avid Codes and you should be good to go.
I've not seen any playback issues with DNXHD on Pro or Workgroup. It is pretty much the same as in Edius 7.5

Thanks, Jerry. So mainly I would be missing out on:

1) Watch Folder
2) Loudness Monitor/Inspector
3) 5.1 Channel Monitoring

Not a huge deal (other than the loudness meter, that would come in handy ... don't do much 5.1 mixing honestly, but would be nice to have the option.)

(Unless there is something else missing from their Product Comparison Chart.)

Seems strange to STRIP features from a Pro product, rather than to introduce NEW features to the "Step up" product. Usually Canopus/GV "step-ups" had more to do with hardware interface, etc.

The monitoring option is for more than just 5.1. That was just an example.
If you have to ask what the items do, you probably have not needed them.
If you didn't upgrade during the Workgroup offer, you're looking at anywhere between $800 and $1000.
