Ok - I've been hearing around the watercooler that some of the new i7 processors are just as good or even faster then the firecoder card? Any Thoughts and anyone know which ones?

Only possible for i7 to beat FCB for Mpeg 2 encoding. In fact i think it's more like dual i7 (XEON 55xx) CPU's was mentioned.... H264 not going to be faster.

but is a high performing i7 going to come close? I'm just trying to justify the FCB purchase - i have a system with the 920 processor and it got the job done in about 6 hours - while WAY to long in any stretch of the imagination - not 100% sure the extra $500 or so is worth it if the newer processesors get it tigheter?

if you can (and you use a better cooler) overclock it to 3.2Ghz for 20 % speed improvement--- still not enough to get near FCB.
