Default ADVC300 adjustments are baffling. Anyone figured them out?

I'm trying to convert 200+ hours worth of old VHS and Hi8 home movies, and I can't figure out what the settings mean, even after studying the manual many times.

The most confusing settings are Black Expansion, White Peak, and White Step, and the audio tones adjustment. What do they mean?

And does anyone have any tips on a good batch of settings to leave pretty much alone for hundreds of hours worth of VHS/Hi8 dubbing?
