Changing the o/s is a big thing so you should expect problems, so do it when you have time. If going to Windows 10 change to EDIUS 8. We have had customers update to Windows 10 with old versions of EDIUS and they don't work properly at all - although this has been more with EDIUS 6 than 6.5. However EDIUS 6 and 6.5 were written well before Windows 10 existed so you can expect problems.

EDIUS 8 is the one tested for Windows 10. EDIUS 7 also seems to work (except Quick Sync) on Windows 10.

I have had o/s updates and software updates go smoothly, but also many times when they haven't and you spend ages sorting it out. I make computers for a living so I know where to start. If you don't, you end up coming to forums and asking a lot of questions. So upgrade when you have time to waste, just in case.

For Windows 10 I would:
Install the
  1. Windows 10 update.
  2. Got the website for the motherboard I have and get the Windows 10 drivers & Install the drivers.
  3. Get Windows 10 drivers for any other hardware I am using - for example a Blackmagic card.
  4. Check my programs
and if necessary get Windows 10 versions of those.

For EDIUS I would:
  1. Install EDIUS 8 (which will uninstall EDIUS 6.5 at the same time).
  2. Install new drivers for any hardware I am using.
  3. Get rid of my user preferences and make new ones.
  4. Make new project presets and capture presets.
  5. Make a copy of an old project before opening it and then open the project and see how it works. I always open a copy because if I have to go back to EDIUS 6.5 (if I can't fix whatever problems have occurred when upgrading) once I have opened a project in EDIUS 8 and saved it I will not be able to open it in 6.5 again.

You don't have to make a new user profile and presets as a lot of times old ones work but I have also seen problems reported here which were solved by making a new user profile.

And if you really can afford the time install windows 10 clean from scratch, after of course cloning the existing drive or if you can't won't or dare not to clone use a new (as in other / used) formatted drive.

All this troublesome lengthy work just to make sure no existing problems carry forward to this new setup you're likely to use for years again to come.

What I would add to David's comments is before starting an upgrade, go through the system and uninstall any older programs. I personally would uninstall whatever version of Edius you have running at the time(Edius 8 should be OK) and deactivate it. Once those two items are finished, go to Windows Update and update the system. This could take some time. So, just let it run. My X58 system ran for close to 4 hours.
After you have completed the updates, install the Win 10 update.

The cleaner the system the better the upgrade will be.
You will have to customize Win 10 to your liking and this could take you some time.

Hey hey guys.. Edius wouldn't even let me deactivate 6
it kept saying that my serial was not valid. I'm assuming since I bought the upgrade it voids the previous serial

I did a full format - deleted partitions and created new ones before installing Windows 7 x64 Pro on this machine

Nothing is installed at all now besides Edius 8 and Andy Snap
It has just started to prompt me for Windows 10 installation.

I have some work I need to do today so trying Edius 8 for the first time

For those that have WIN 10, it seems it's one big malware OS.
Have a watch if you have time.
Staying with WIN 7 and 8 for me.

Bear in mind that going forward the newer CPU's won't be properly supported so you will find that either Win 7/8 won't work on new CPU's or that they will run much slower than Win 10.

Also there are easy ways to block the Win 10 reporting, and a lot of those same reporting features are being added into Win 7 and 8 through essential updates so unless you know which ones to remove your older version of Windows may well be doing the same thing.

I have all of those items turned off. Just a few clicks. No need to panic.

Yes, turning them all off is okay, but what got my attention is every time you do an update, Microsoft turns them back on.
Basically have to recheck after each update:-)

Looks like they have got to Win 7 too.
Open Start and type Customer Experience Improvement Program in search box.

Then click no.
What a bunch of scumbags.

Not sure where you got that from, but mine don't get turned back on when I do an update.

There was an issue when they released the big update to 1511 back in November which turned it back on (essentially it was a whole new install of Windows that replaced your previous version of Win 10 and therefore reset everything), but that was pulled and replaced within a few days with a version that kept the old settings.
I install Win 10 systems every day and I install using build 1511 and turn off those options then run the updates and they never get turned back on.

Yep, I mentioned that in my last post
