Default PE9 Vs. Movie Maker

This question is not directly related to my ADVC110 but I think someone here will easily be able to answer this question. I am having the usual problems with PE9 (should have used Edius?) due to instability. This is probably because my PC is a few years old and Adobe thinks everyone has a supercomputer. Anyway I just want to get the old 8mm videotapes digitized, I can edit later. The ADVC110 is working great, as is the TBC I bought based on recommendations here, thanks for that. Now, does it matter what software I use to capture? Movie Maker seems to work just fine (hey, at least it doesnt constantly crash) but I was wondering if the transfer quality would for some reason be not as high as I would get using PE. I have chosen the "DV-AVI (NTSC)" setting.

If all you want to do is capture the DV stream to your hard drive, then it doesn't matter what you use. There will be no change in quality. Many here have used a small free application called WinDV, which is just perfect for older PCs.

However you'll want plenty of space, as DV occupies around 13GB per hour of captured video.

Default Thanks Ken!

Good deal. Movie Maker seems to have worked perfectly, if I see any problems when I review I will check out WinDV. Big files no problem, I want to retain as much resolution as possible. Now that I am nearly an expert Im about finished!

- Presently DV capture utility bundled with Edius 4.6 works best for me.

- I've used Enosoft DV processor for a while (Free version for personal use) There are some limitations for personal use but they are not critical for single camera capture. I had to disable WinXP screensaver not to intterrupt capture though. I've used Raw DV format back then.

- Considered even purchasing DVMP Pro and tried the demo version.

Eventially returned back to DV capture utility by Canopus.
