Default ADVC-55 input from 16:9 cams thru switcher

I am running a couple XHA1s Cameras through a Datavide SE-500 switcher, into the ADVC-55 and then into my MacBooK Pro, capturing via Final Cut Pro 7

I set up the capture seTtings initially as 720x480 with 16:9 Anamorphic checked, but the QT clips still show aren't showing up as 16:9, if QT info, they show (actual 640x480)

If I change capture setting to 853x480 custom, even with 16:9 Anamorphic, I get the same results in captured clips.

Does the ADVC-55 have the ability to truly capture the 16:9 signal it is receiving via my switcher?

16:9 DV is anamorphic 720x480.
The ADVC55, however, can't detect this, so it won't flag the clip at widescreen DV.

Not sure how it works in FCP, but in EDIUS you just check the clip properties to 16:9 aspect instead of 4:3.

This thread over at DVinfo might help:

As Brandon said, the ADVC devices can't tell if the analog source is 4:3 or 16:9 so it simply sets the 4:3 flag in the captured DV stream. What you then need to do is tell your editing application that the captured DV file is really 16:9 (i.e. you change a setting to tell it to ignore the embedded 4:3 flag and to treat it as if the 16:9 flag had been set). I haven't used FCP so I don't know how to do it, but most editing applications have some way of doing it as it is a common enough requirement.

You will also find that QT often does not honour any embedded 16:9 flag in a file it is asked to play. It tends to assume that the pixels which make up the video are square (a 640x480 video which is meant to be widescreen should have its pixels stretched horizontally on playback to get the widescreen effect). I prefer to use VLC Player rather than QT because it plays files as they are meant to be played!
