Default Vitascene Display Card Questions

I have not really used the Vitascene transitions very much yet but what I have tested looks very good as far as the quality is concerned. But I have a couple of questions.

1. When I go to open the Vitascene setup window, I always get the complaints that my graphics card is not good enough, etc. Although my graphics card is not the latest & greatest, it is pretty good. Yet I can get no realtime playback of a transition (at least with the HD720 clips I have tested with). I am sure this has to do with the fact that (unlike most folks) I run an Edius system that contains 2 display cards so that my computer desktop has three monitors (4 if you count the HD production monitor and 5 if you count the HDTV also attached... hehehe). Because I have 2 display cards... I think that Vitascene may be seeing the lesser of the two. The 2 cards are an Nvidia QuadroFX 3400 and a QuadroFX330 (which have 256mb and 64mb respectively). When I try to play a Vitascene transition, I get the 'Playback Stopped' message. Down in the Vitascene settings where it talks about display card memory, it seems to see the larger of the two cards memory. Should it be playing a transition without problems when a display card has 256mb? Anyone else running 2 display cards with Vitascene?

2. When I used the Vitascene circle wipe transition, for example, I really like the quality I can get on the bordered edge around the circle. (Edius has improved quite a bit with some of the transition qualities but there are some more areas that need improvement and the Vitascene quality looks good in comparison). My question is... are there any more standard type wipes in Vitascene like the circle wipe? For example, a bordered wipe that will wipe horizontally, vertically and diagonally with the same nice border control? All the other transitions I see are more fancy with blurs, sparkles, etc. I'm looking for more standard type stuff.

Thanks for any ideas!

Hi Mike,

for GPU effects on HD projects you need a strong video card with > 512 MB (minimum is 256 MB) RAM.
To get an idea witch card are recommended:
http://www.prodad.de/gb/vitascene_std_gfxcard.html
I have no experience with two display cards.

With a standard video card from the above ProDAD list it should not be a problem to play any Vitas-cene (or EDIUS GPU) transition with 2-3 sec in RT.

2.There are some of classic transitions, like horizontal camera shutter, radial wipes.
http://www.prodad.de/gb/vitascene_std_details.html
You have to play and find your favourite effects. All of them you can modify.

To have fun with GPU effects you need a little bit of power on your video card ;-)

Eric,

Thanks very much for that info. My graphics card is on the list but is probably not as powerful as more recent cards. I will consider a display card upgrade at a later time (especially if I build a new system later on).

On the transition samples shown, there is one (on the second group, upper left thumbnail) that shows a person jumping with a baseball cap on. This one almost looks like a bordered diagonal wipe. Do you know which transition this is so I can experiment with it?

Thanks again.

Mike, why don't you put two clips on the timeline and try these effects yourself? Much easier than someone else trying to describe them.
This way you'll also find if a particular transition or effect will work in realtime.

The effect can be made with:
Horizontal Camera Shutter In/Out#310
Change Source B ---> Video B
Geometry --> 45

You can modify all VitaScene effects by alpha mask, border, geometry e.g. so you can create millions of individual effects.

Agree, this is the best way to learn.....

Thanks very much for the info. I have seen now that I can change the alpha source for the circle wipe to be a straight edge wipe (which I can then adjust the angle to make it diagonal).

Thanks again.

Mike, there are many Alpha-Maps included and you can crwate your own alphas and use it in VitaScene

Eric,

There is another question I have related to this.

After I changed the alpha mask (using the provided masks) that let me change the shape of the transition, when I scrub through the transition... I notice that there is a brightness change to one of the images during the transition.

For example, as I wipe from ImageA to ImageB, during the transition ImageB is slightly darker than normal. The instant we are past the transition, ImageB becomes brighter (it's normal brightness) again.

Is there a setting that would affect this or is there something about the provided alpha masks that might affect the brightness during a transition?

ImageA brightness does not seem affected during the transition... only ImageB.

Thanks again.

Eric,

Correction... ImageA brightness is also affected during the transition. (Just tried applying the transition to some different clips and I can clearly see the ImageA and ImageB brightness change during the transition).

Thanks again.
