Okay guys anyone have any recommendations system wise for cutting and monitoring 4K UHD footage with Edius up to 50p. Interested in CPU recommendations mainly. Are the latest Thread Ripper chips worth considering? Cheers Dave.

I use the i9 9900k which i am very pleased with
see signature Edius is my main NLE but it works well also with other NLEs I do not have a 4k screen but have BM IP4k in the system

If you are interested in Threadripper I would wait until the 7nm parts appear likely in October. You will then have the choice of really fast parts or a discount on the 2nd generation. As a guide my first generation 1920 Threadripper ( 12 core ) is just a little faster than my 4790K in multicam since of course it has to do all the work rather than use QS for decode. It will run in 1/2 preview with filters on in multicam for instance as then EDIUS does use my 1080Ti for PCC etc. If you use other software like Premiere or Resolve then a fast GPU like my 1080Ti makes the system fly and is faster than EDIUS in this configuration. I took advantage of the low price on the 1920 ( $400 ) last fall intending to replace with the 7nm parts when they appear this year.
You may also want to wait for the announcement ( at Computex in a a few weeks ) of the AMD Ryzen 3000 series that also may have large core counts on the AM4 socket. You can always edit in HD then switch back to 4K. If you want to monitor in 4K HDR then you will need one of the top BM boards like the new 8K or Decklink 4K Extreme to get 12G output. Then a good monitor too. Normal multicam for me is two tracks of UHD 60P from my GH5 and GH5S with one track of HD from the AX100 in a HD 60P project. I have no current interest in UHD output so monitoring with the BM IP4K is fine.

This is something of some concern. Threadripper 3 has been removed from the AMD Roadmap.

Yes I just saw that too. Will have to wait and see what comes out at Computex. Can't see them abandoning totally but may be true that there will be shortage of 7nm chiplets leading to a delay. I did not expect until October or November anyway so lots of time for new announcements to keep people guessing.

Assuming it is H.264 based 4K I would get an Intel processor because Quick Sync makes quite a difference. The best one with QS is the 9900K. However, I have not found any set up that can play more than 1-2 layers with 50P UHD in a 50P UHD project with EDIUS.

David is correct if you only use EDIUS as Quicksync does make a lot of difference. Other programs may benefit a lot more though from extra cores or the ability to use fast GPU's. As I mentioned my Threadripper 1920 is only a little bit faster than my 4790K with EDIUS for timeline playback. Encode is a little different as BLuray m2ts export is about the same speed as QS. However the Threadripper is a lot faster with just about everything else I have on the PC.
The extra cores also mean I can do something else while TMPgenc is encoding etc. For EDIUS alone the 9900K would be the number one choice at the moment. If EDIUS could use the GPU's like Resolve then it may be different. Maybe EDIUS 10.
