I asked him that early on in this discussion and it doesn't hurt to remind him.

To be honest, I'm running out of suggestions. The Renasas card might be the easy solution. We both know that will work, and it's a cheap option.
But, that depends on whether or not the playback device and the Shuttle is working properly.

Thank you both.

Thank you for actually researching my MB, unfortunately I have tried all rear panel USB's. One of the USB controllers, I think the VIA, don't work at all, the control panel doesn't even recognize that the shuttle is attached. Both the Intel & ASMedia work, but exhibit the problem.

The one remaining possibility is that MAYBE I was on "the other" USB chip when it worked for those first few captures, even though now both USB chips exhibit the audio distortion.

I've used several HDMI sources and I'm confident that's not the issue.

I am beginning to wonder if the shuttle itself has stopped working properly, that is a thought. Another call to BM tech support might yield something.

Thanks again

If the audio is distorted when using different sources, that could be a leading indicator that the Shuttle has an issue. BM support would be the best way to go.

I beginning to agree that the Renesas chipset add-in card may be the best/easiest/cheapest solution. We know if that doesn't do it then it's a defective shuttle.

Do you know of a card and/or chipset that is known to work with shuttle? I've seen discussions of this on forums, but they are old and a bit contradictory.

Thanks

Go to Posts #13 and #14. Those are two options for cards.

I have not had the Shuttle plugged into my computer for ages and have just set it up again. There is a setting on the audio tab of the Blackmagic control panel that says use "HiFi audio levels". Have you tried that ticked or unticked? I have only notice this on the UltraStudio 4K, which has the same tick box, but on the 4K gizmo I get distorted analogue audio unless this is ticked.

Looking at the control panel, the audio connector shown there is a ballanced XLR or Canon jack that can take high audio levels. (As in several volts)

The HiFi levels settings should take it right down to consumer level of 0.775 volt.

This might be a fix to the problem......

Thanks for the suggestions.

I believe I tried that, but to be sure I'll try again and report back.

I think I have it working. Thanks so much for everyone's input.

For those interested, here's how it went:
- I started by attempting to update the BM software to the latest on the website which is 10.6. This resulted in a "bricked" IS as the firmware upgrade failed (many times).

- I then attempted to update usb drivers which made issues worse in that one of the updates, the VIA, actually caused the entire USB system to not work post BIOS. Trying to debug a system with a crippled KB/M is interesting. It was so bad I had to revert my system to the USB drivers I started with. This cost me several days.

- The exchange with blackmagic tech support recommended NOT the latest software version, but vers 10.5.4 (because I was running Win7 64 - apparently later versions of the s/w are not "as compatible" with Win7).
Jerry suggested this as well - good suggestion - I wish I had started there.

- After getting my system usb drivers to where I started (about a year old), and installing ver 10.5.4, and using a USB port on the Intel USB controller, everything started working exactly as it should. Captures are beautiful and clean audio. And the A/V is in sync (I was having sync issue too).

I haven't done a ton of captures yet, but the few I've done so far are great, whether with media express or within Edius. Hopefully it'll "stick."

I'm now afraid to update to W10. LOL

Thanks again to everyone's input. It really helped.
Dave
