Default After Installing 9, AVI's created with 8 won't play

Not sure what's going on
I know AVI's created with Edius won't play on a machine that doesn't have edius unless you install the codec, HOWEVER I have installed edius 9 after removing Edius 8, and videos previously created are saying 'file is not supported'

they will import fine into edius, but they won't play on Windows

I know the option of finding the GV codec and installing it is there, but should I have to do this when I have edius 9 installed?

Don't ever install the codec pack on a system that has edius installed, as the codecs are installed with edius, and are most likely newer than the ones in the codec pack. The codec pack is only intended to be used on a system without edius, and can potentially break edius if you install it by overwriting the codecs with older or more generic versions.

AVI means nothing. It is simply a container. What are the properties of the file. resolution, codec, number of audio channels? What player are you trying to play them in?

I had no problems playing files after upgrading from E8 to E9, but I am not running Windows 10, so this could be related to Windows 10 and/or recent Windows 10 updates.

Hey Bern, I did not install the codec

I mean we are literally talking every AVI I have ever created with previous versions of Edius

I can import them fine into Edius 9
but they won't play anymore on my Windows desktop in Media player or any other player - when I had edius 8 installed they all played just fine

considering I've been using Edius since around 2008, the fact that I can't play videos created in the last 12 years on my PC is a big problem and I need to find the solution

has nobody else had this problem?

I'm getting 'MISSING CODEC this item was encoded in a format that's not supported 0xc00d5212"

ANY help appreciated thanks

I'm wondering if something about the uninstall 8, install 9 process caused the problem so here is what I'm going to do

I'm going to see if these videos play fine on my laptop that still has 8 instsalled
if they play fine then I will upgrade to 9 on my laptop, and see if they still play

if they fail to play then then we know its something in the upgrade process

so on the computer with Edius 9 installed - ALL avi files ever created over the last 12 years with edius are NOT working - they play with audio only and a black video and the CODEC error, which is how my videos play on client machines that don't have edius (before they install the codec)

Did you uninstall Edius 8 prior to installing Edius 9?
During the install of 9, was malwarebytes or an anti-virus program running in the background? This
includes Windows Defender.

if your laptop is OK now, take a system image before installing E9. If avi's still do not pay with 9 installed at least you can get back to E8 by reloading the image.
Best of luck.

Hey Jerry and Geoff thanks for responding

it looks like the files do NOT work on my laptop which still has Edius 8
(will install 9 shortly)

the videos that aren't playing are older, so possibly created with Edius 6
when I open them in Edius they play fine..

Is it possible that older Edius used a codec that newer Edius doesn't have?
if that was the case I would think they wouldn't open iN Edius either so that's confusing?

The GOOD news is it is NOT a problem caused by 8-9 upgrade
bad news is I'd like to figure out what the issue is

I have attached 2 screenshots
1 is the error message I'm getting when I try to open in Windows Media Player (which normally opens any AVI on any computer I have Edius installed

2nd screenshot is the same files in edius with their video details showing

Questions from post #6.

you mean did I uninstall edius 8 before installing edius 9?
yes i did
no virusware running

Edius 9 appears to be running fine now,
but as mentioned in my most recent post these AVI files wouldn't play on the laptop that still had 8 installed. I put some screenshots up to show the details of the AVI files and the error I'm getting :)
I'm wondering if these AVI files were created in Edius 6 - no idea why the codec changee? or how to get them to run?
