Hey Barry! With performance like that, there are probably many of us who would love to know your setup. When you get a moment, please post all your computer specs for those of us less fortunate! Great rig!
Many thanks - and followed your post in case we have the same issue in the future. Steve sure came up with the right answers!
Best,
Alan

Sorry Jerry, I don't have any 4:2:2 4K 59.94 fps content to test. However, I do have some 29.97 time lapse sequences converted to interim HQX files which are 7952/5304, which is larger than 8K, and I would assume that they should qualify as a heavy lift. At least they were far from realtime on my 4790s. With 8 bit project settings, I'm able to stack 3 layers of them. Can't say though what would happen with the content you mentioned. Wish I could!

Hi Alan,
The system has an AMD Threadripper 3960x, Nvidia 2080ti graphic card, 128GB ram, primary drive and a secondary drive are 1 and 2tb Samsung Evo 970 plus NVMe, and there are a couple of WD 12TB storage drives. I may have to give up eating, driving, etc., after paying for it! :) But, these days, most of what I do is time lapse with content from 14 bit 43mpxl Sony A7R2s and I was really needing some more horsepower.

Barry, what MOBO do you have?

The MOBO is a Gigabyte TRX40 AORUS PRO Wifi

I configured the system with Puget Systems. At first, I was going to go with an Intel i9 10980xe but, partially influenced by comments from Jerry in a PM, decided on an AMD based system. Puget does a lot of testing and comparisons of different processor and system configurations in articles they post on their site and after reading some of them and others from other sources, it seemed like this latest generation of Threadrippers was the way to go. I gave some thought to the 3970, but the performance increase over the 3960 wasn't great enough the justify the additional $700. price difference.

Jerry, I just tried it on a 3840x2160 10bit 4:2:2 59.94 file that Ron Evans sent me to test. It did 2 layers at buffer at 32:32. 3 layers maxed it out, but 2 was easy.

As a comparison to my Threadripper 1920 a 12 core first generation Threadripper.

Files are ProRes 422 from the Ninja V. HDMI output from the GH5S at 10bit UHD 59.97P. The GH5S or GH5 will output this but not record internally while doing this.

Project 3840x2160 59.97P 10 bit

My system will play 1 track with buffer 15/16. Flickering

2 or 3 tracks with 1/2 preview again buffers 15/16. Flickering. Pips of track 2 and 3 with layouter. .

So as expected the latest Threadripper with twice the cores is twice as good !!

Ron can you try set your buffer settings to 8K?

I assume you mean 8GB so buffer is around 258. Makes little difference. It cannot maintain buffer so having more is not of much use. Will fill of course with shift but empties quickly. The ProRes files will fill and maintain buffer with one track. Anymore and the cpu cannot fill at 8bit setting or 1/2 for more than one track ( layouter pip on that second track )

Really strange is that the HLG HEVC 10 bit ( of course 4:2:0 ) plays one track fine. The clip of h264 standard picture profile which is 4:2:2 just will not play. Both of course 29.97P internal recording.

Multicam of anything 10bit grinds to a halt. Just too much work for the cpu by itself.
