Default Canopus ADVC-500 Question

Question...

Please PM me if you have one for sale. Getting pretty desperate, looked everywhere...bought four of them on Ebay and not one of them worked.

Thanks,
J

Did you search the ADVC forum for posts covering the 500? There is some implication in the posts that it may have been easy to fry the the IEEE port chip, which would be fatal.

Also, Win 7 may require you use the "legacy" driver, not the one it installs by default.

However, unless there is compelling reason to use the 500, its probably not the best choice for analog capture these days.

Would depend in part of the sourced material, and the rest of the system.

I've found the Black Magic Designs Intensity Pro is a reasonable choice for analog capture with Win7 and works well with Edius Pro 7 for composite, s-video & component analog and HDMI capture. It sold for under $200, and with a bit iof searching can still be found. However it has been replaced in the line by the Intensity Pro 4K, which has some unresolved issues with analog capture levels.

However, many people say it needs a good solid, in-spec signal for reliable capture.

If you want IEEE1394 and a DV-format file then the ADVC-300 was a reasonable choice, but DV format is not a good choice for doing video restoration. The ADVC 110 is still available, but less capable then the discontinued 300, and some IEEE ports may be underpowered requiring a wall wart for reliable performance.

For serious analog video restoration on a budget visit http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/ for their take on the subject. Be warned - they are serious about it and have a high threshold for "good enough."

Default analog capture

I have an ADVC-300. Wondered why they discontinued it but kept the 110. Also wondered if the conversion to DV was less than optimal, so thanks for that extra info. I'll check out digitalfaq.
