Rumors that M2 SSD lose data

What is there real going on ?
In some media are rumors that M2 SSD drives loos data when they aren't used and powerless ?
There are articles that say they will loos and other deny that ?
Any body have experiences or know more about it?

Not sure that those rumours just apply to M.2 SSD media but I have read claims that SSDs and USB pen drives need to be used/powered up to avoid long term loss of data. Not had this problem myself but advise clients to use USB drives annually to be on the safe side. Peter

It's all so "fluid"data,stored in a "few" chips,temperature would also had an effect on it,is it "fake news" or is it real ?
That's the downside of fast media (internet) somewhere someone starts something and how fast it starts it's own life.
I have now for a few years a Sata SSD and now a few months an M2.0 SSD,bud had also no problems with it,I hope it stay's that way.

I did not believe this but then had some SSDs sitting around with data on, on a shelf and had not opened them for a few months. When I did, some of the data was corrupt. So it would appear to be true. Everything I read suggested it would take several months and just having some power going through them would be ok.

in a word, yes: all SSD's sooner or later may lose data when in a powerless state. It mainly varies according to the technology and storage temperature.
Flash NAND memories (cheaper and slower) retain data for a longer time compared to RAM-based banks which, instead, are much faster. In some cases, the latter is supported by a super-capacitor acting as battery both during the writing cycle and in their on shelf state. Unfortunately, most manufacturers limit the publication of data retention info.
Overall rule: SSD's stored @ 20°C retain their data twice longer vs 30°C.

I think if you want to have real long term security then tape is the best choice like this https://www.quantum.com/products/tap...o-5/index.aspx. One can find a half height internal version for about $1500 and 1.5T tapes are about $20

So to be secure ,OS and Edius are on my M2.0 SSD witch is also my boot "disk" : have a disk clone or iso file of the SSD and in case of emergency copy it to the boot disk and your'e back running in no time.
A "normal" HDD in the PC casing but not connected until its necessary.
I know this is mention not that long ago,but what's the best way to make / have such clone / ISO disk.
And I'm not going mentioning the license .

Don't get warm fuzzies about things with moving parts. Isn't that a step backward? How is a tape machine and cassette any more reliable than anything else with moving parts that will eventually fail?

I guess the best safeguard is always redundancy for critical data, with similar and alternative media.
