Default Compatibility with Final Cut

Hello I am new to the GV forum so perhaps this has been covered...
I am trying to transfer files to and from Edius-Final Cut. I am finding that the Edius-created AVIs are not recognized by FC. Also there is a file size limit for FC-created quicktime files to be transferred out of the Apple onto thumbdrives for import into Edius... Does anyone have experience in transferring media back and forth between Edius and Final Cut?

ProRes 422 works fine in Edius. Going back to FCP is another story.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has experiences of 'that other story'

QT animation codec works for me for short clips but I'd really appreciate a decent working solution.

Anyone tried m_jpg a?b at various settings? I don't need the alpha.

Uncompressed should do the trick as well.

I've had some success with quicktime export using the DVCProHD codec. Final Cut read the files ok. (But gosh, it took a while... lot of footage)

Hmmm uncompressed's a bit overkill for my needs Jerry. Shame Edius can't export ProRes as well. Apple licensing I guess.

Interesting Rob. It's only SD I need currently but that's useful info.

I would look at exporting to AVID's DNxHD codec as it's available for both platforms and a free download. Google is your friend on this.

My understanding is that ProRez is a ripoff of AVID's DNxHD codec as well. Export out as QT with DNxHD as the codec. The MAC user only need to install the codec on their machine and all should be good. IF you're having to deal with m2t files, you'll need to purchase the Quicktime Pro mpeg2 component to render out files based on that format.

I use Handbrake to convert files and since it utilizes Quicktime Pro, once you install the DNxHD codec, it becomes available to Handbrake - I choose the DNxHD 145 setting since I shoot 1440x1080i at the present time. YMMV

Default Transferring solution

It sounds like you're issue is not with the file types, since you can convert to QT for FC, but HOW to get the files between computers-
I had a similar problem-- easy solution-- I purchased a Dlink server (about $180, installed drives for another $150)- hooked up to my network- now I can work off the server, transfer, store between computers-- wonderful!

I'm not with my Mac at the moment but Google 'Writing NTFS files on Mac' I've downloaded a free app that enables Mac (Leopard in my case) to write to NTFS formatted external drives.

It's a bit slow but being able to write unlimited file sizes is great.

Thanks for the excellent advice bluprojekt. Do you think this'll work on Vista64?

I'm curious, and not to start a mac vc pc war, have you requested this same function from FCP(Apple)? I have seen this same general request a lot recently. Since you are obviously using FCP to finish, try there first.
Why is it Grass Valley's responsibility to make Edius files compatible with another editor?
Here is a link that will convert mpeg to prores.

As I said, I am just curious as to why it is left to GV to make changes.

A link to a program for conversion:

and a discussion about this on DVX forum:
