Default Edius/Procoder to H264?

OK, in my quest for better quality deliverables with interactivity for my clients... H264 may be the answer (thank you Tinsern for pointing me in this direction) since I can build the interactivity in FLASH and play the H264 from there.

I am still testing but it looks very good and can be played by FLASH and Quicktime (for the MAC users) but I am very ignorant on how the H264 pipeline should work.

I will be encoding 1280x720 HQ files.

1. I have Edius5 and Procoder3. Where would be the best place (quality and speedwise to do the encode? (I am currently testing in PC3).

2. From what I have gathered so far... I need to make some type of file using the H264 codec. I am currently making Quicktimes with a MOV extension. These play fine in the Quicktime player and I assume would pull into the latest version of FLASH ?(don't have it yet). Is this the way others are making H264 files? What other format extensions (for playing these in Windows Media Player) should be used?

3. I notice in the settings that there is a streaming setting. Does this setting add a lot to the filesize? Sounds like it's required for anything that will be viewed on from a website.

Thanks for the ideas!

One thing about the encoded H264 QT MOVs from PC3... they appear to have some kind of gamma adjustment going on in the encode that makes the videos look washed-out compared to the WMVs of the same thing.

Is there any way to turn this gamma adjustment off?

Thanks!

G'day Mike.
Would any of your QT settings need adjusting? As opposed to what you want 'reset' elsewhere?
The other issue you now seem to have (for me) is that without the most updated Flash player these files and your interactivity may not be playable on client computers.

Am I right? If so do you see this a problem? I do, if I am correct.

peterC,

Thanks again for the ideas.

I don't really see any Gamma setting within the QuickTime Player app. (Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place).

I have been doing my H264 encoding tests with Procoder3 and also with Mediacoder.

In PC3, on the Source I am doing a 709 to 601 color conversion (but this visibly doesn't seem to change the image). On the Target, I am doing a gamma adjustment to try to bring the end result back to what I get when I make a WMV.

I will continue to provide WMVs to my clients until I have all the kinks worked out for FLASH/H264 (and will still probably deliver WMVs as backups anyway). But I would really like to improve the look of the presentation and FLASH may provide this (MultiMediaBuilder was almost there with the WMVs... but creating the video controls from scripting was really tough. May work yet though... we'll see).

Thanks again.

Oh, and I also include Media Player Classic for my clients which will also play the H264 MP4s and MOVs.

Thanks!

G'day Mike.
It wasn't so much gamma directly, but any adjustment on playout through QT that you could or maybe did in the past, adjust in the preferences box.
Did a test on Std QT and could only get audio options, Playback jog and playback speed, no Video adj's allowed (Bright, Colour, Cont, tint). Maybe on Pro QT?

Also, I crossed my wires a little. Was thinking about Flash and some of the setup nooks and crannies you can get into with it. So sorry about that
