HD caddy recommendation please?

I have a spare 5.25 drive bay in the front of my PC into which I would like to fit a caddy. For too long I have been taking off the side to switch out hard drives.

Can anyone suggest a good brand to go for that could accomodate either a 3.5 SATA drive or SSD?

I have read that some caddies aren't very good at ejecting a SSD.

I have an Akasa Lokstor M51 HDD Combo Rack that takes SSD and HDD drives. Have not had problems using Samsumg 850 Pro SSD in this. Hope that is of help. Peter

While i don't use SSD in Hot swap bays All my data drives Are in Welland Mobile racks.
Using them since years, 0 issues.

same here, but as soon as 2TB SSD come down in price, I will insert them into the welland via (no need for tools) adapter

I already tested this and get the full transfer speed of 530MB/sec

Thank you for all the replies.

I think Peter's suggestion for the Akasa Lokstor M51 is probably nearest to what I want, although I don't need the USB 3 ports.

The IcyDocks look a possibility as well, but which one? I would prefer to have a personal recommendation. I only need it to be able to take either a SATA 3 HDD or an SSD.

The Welland seems to be a two part purchase needing a separate tray for the SSD which ups the price a bit and the spec says it is for SATA 1 / 2, not SATA 3, despite the ad heading.

ignore the specs

I have it here and running at 200MB/sec on normal Sata3 drive and at 540MB/sec with SSD

make sure the Welland is connected to a Sata6 port on the mobo and you set the port to hotswap in Bios if you wish to hotswap

Thanks Anton for the clarification.

I don't think that Welland is available here in the UK, having done a Google search, and the eBay link say they don't ship to the UK.

I will probably get the Akasa as it is easy to get here.

These are the Icy Dock ones I have in my main system and Office PC.

My older systems have the previous versions, including IDE caddies.
I don't hot swap but as the new C Drives are SSD that is not an issue.

I have ended up buying this one, which looks the same as the Akasa that Peter mentioned:

I like that one also. Duo drives. I'm about to order that on ebay via NewEgg.

Sometimes I see the same product with different logos. Probably all made in China.

I've been using something labeled BPN-DE110SS from iStarUSA, bought from NewEgg. They work well for me.

I tried another brand (Kingwing from from MicroCenter in the USA if I recall correctly) but the drive connectors inside it failed almost immediately.

Hi Anton, is there a USA dealer? I tried to order and they won't ship to USA. I will be replacing my thermal take ssd caddy that broke. I don't recommend that one

Don't buy the thermal take one, it broke on me. Get the one Anton is recommending

I have had better luck with the metal ones. I have had a couple of the plastic ones fail.

Go to ebay in the US. I've seen them there. A different company but look like the others.

antonsvideo 05-21-2016 12:45 AM

The Icy Box IB-2536 2.5" to 3.5" HDD/SSD Converter Plastic is only a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter so that you can quickly insert it into a 3:5" hotswap bay such as Welland

It does not break, there is nothing to break unless you lay it on the ground and smash it with a hammer
