Edius 8.5 HEVC decoder

Hi, I am using Edius 8.53.3262 and am wondering why my 50p H.265/HEVC encoded movies are not accepted by Edius? I make them from HQX avi files exported from Edius and fed into Video Mastering Works 6, using a standard template.

The 50p HEVC files play fine from a portable USB hard drive connected to my 55" LG OLED 8 series tv, but only my 24p HEVC movies are accepted by Edius.

Could this be a limitation of the Edius HEVC decoder in Edius 8.5? If so, perhaps Edius 9 would play them?

Hi Claire.

Although I can't give you an answer, I can confirm that I've had similar, and worse, results using the same version of Edius.

Not that it's an option for certain instances of native acquisition or certain target outputs. But I've held off from using h.265/HEVC as a regular codec option for acquisition and delivery and stay with h.264, which can still be slightly problematic with E8.5

If HEVC is at all avoidable, then h.264 will give the same comparative visual results, all be it at higher bitrates. Although working at 10 Bit will present issues with h.264

I'd guess that E9 would/should be better but don't use it myself, so couldn't say for sure. Maybe someone on 9 could help you with that.

Cheers,
Dave.

Canons new and very nice flagship XF705 has HEVC as a compulsory acquisition format for its higher quality level settings. I’d be very interested to see how this new native format performs in Edius!

Hi Dave,

I was only wanting to pop my 50p HEVC files into Edius for a quick check but no worries, I can do it in Resolve instead. It's just a bit slower to open compared to Edius.

Hi Claire.

Yes, unfortunately there are better options than E8.5 for HEVC (even free), although probably not as easier an NLE experience. Although I suppose anything else would be easier/better than E8.5 if it deals with your codecs better.

Hopefully someone using E9 will chime in at some point and give you some solid answers.

It may well be the case that the drive to E9 for many Edius users may be that it is simply better even if just for one thing, better codec compatibility.

Cheers,
Dave.

I got 8.53 here and it plays back the H.265 files I made with Handbrake no problems, just bit laggy to edit that's all.

83 minute 25p 4K UHD 229GIG HQX file, into Handrake for a 4.4 gig 4K UHD H.265 file. Quality looks the bloody same lol

Running a i7 8700K CPU here.

I did have problems when I built this system not having the right Intel HD Graphics driver displaying GH5 4K 50P 10bit files, but found one that worked after tinkering around some. :-)

Hi Paul,

It's the 10 bit I am concerned about...

Since AFAIK the video pipeline of Handbrake is currently only 8-bit that's what it will be supplying the x.265 encoder with despite the HQX 10 bit source you fed it. The encoder will go on to produce "10 bit" output from that.

10 bit in name only?

Just did a test of 2 mins of HQX from my GH5 encoded with MW6 NVENC encode ( since its quick ) and it plays fine in EDIUS 8.53 and looks no different to my source but about 1/3 the file size. Will try x265 but it was going to take 22 mins !!

Ah! Well thanks for that Ron... I tried creating the 50p H.265/HEVC clip with MW6 once more... and this time success! It turns out that on my previous attempts I had inadvertently left the profile at level 6.1@high instead of 5.1@high

EEK!

I think this was because being new to MW6 I had started with the 'File output' template instead of 'MPEG'. Seemed reasonable choice at the time until I found out the other options in the MPEG template. Hmm...

Yes lots of options to select in MW6
