New HP Laptop for EDIUS 6
I purchased a new HP laptop for EDIUS and it does not have a firewire port and neither does it have a way to put an adapter card into it. My cameras only have firewire output. Can anyone tell me how to remedy this - a good USB to firewire adapter to make this work and where I would purchase it? Thanks. Al Spencer

Unfortunately there is nothing that will handle realtime protocol conversion reliably. Return the laptop and get something with a Firewire port or an ExpressCard slot so you can add a Firewire card.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find laptops with FireWire and Express slots. On a related note, Thunderbolt should hit laptops very soon. That could be a video game changer.

Yes, I have a Fujitsu laptop that is really lacking by today's standards but I plan on keeping it until it croacks -- it has both Firewire (which I use with my ADVC-300) as well as a PCMCIA/PCCard slot which is useful for offloading P2 cards. Luckily with P2 there are a number of USB-based card readers including a new multi-slot USB3 reader from Panasonic.

Anybody contemplating buying any equipment for use with Edius products would do no better than to look at the website of the good Dave of DVC Hove. Lot and lots of accurate and down to earth info.

Unfortunately have to echo THoff's advice here... Look for a laptop that has an ExpressCard or PC Card (aka PCMCIA) slot...

Alternatively, if you don't need mobile capture/output, you could look for one that has a docking station that has a PCI or PCIe slot.

If neither of the above are an option, you could lug around an old laptop that does have Firewire, and use it for file capture/output, but that'll put extra time and hassle into the workflow.

I just got a new laptop 3 weeks ago after doing a lot of research the only laptops out there with 1394 at least with the big names are there mobile workstation units. Dell, IBM and HP all have them but they are the high price units, ~$2K.

I went to and got a Sager 17" with a firewire. See my specs below. Under $1800. Still use firewire on my old cam and to stream so I wanted it.
