  • Edius crashing? Solution here.

I installed 'cartoonr' and my NEO started to crash like crazy.
The author of 'cartoonr' said that it's not their program, despite the error pointed to the DLL file of 'cartoonr'.

I also had some crashes due to rendering WAV at timeline as well, but not often.

So, I got my trusted 'Register Mechanic' program and ran it.
It found 543 files, DLL that was at one time attached to some program(s).
I used Register Mechanic for years and I forgot about it for the last month or so. After Register Mechanic deleted all those files.
    NO MORE CRASHES!

I would urge anyone to buy this Register Mechanic program.
You will be blown away how much crap reside in the registry.
It saved me many aggravation and time in the years since I bought the first copy. There are other programs to clean registry, but I found this one the best and simple to use by anyone.

    Disclaimer:
I am not affiliated with Registry Mechanic, nor do I receive any monetary rewards from anyone.

    Register

    Hi,
When people use these programs they must understand that the programs only clean what they know, i.e software that the program identifies with, I use to use 3rd party registry cleaners years ago but not now, I tend to stay away from these sought of things as thay have been known to remove windows files as well.

    Cheers

      That's not entirely true.

There are many types of problems that stem from registry entries staying behind when ActiveX controls, DirectShow filters, and other types of DLLs are removed. A program that enumerates different types of objects and checks whether the files are in fact present can fix problems by either removing the registration entries, trying to locate the file in another location, or providing some other type of solution.

        Reg

Each to there own, but after 25yrs in the buisness and 15 of them with Microsoft, I have found that they can remove windows reg entries that are vital to windows, as I said earlier the programs only know what the programmer has told it to find, and with Active X the settings are in IE tools that you can set up your self, but I do know a few people that run these types of programs and swear by them, Not me though and I would never use them on a high end system. But this is my personal option on the subject.

Not wishing to be rude, but spoken like a true Microsoft engineer, what you say is fine for trained computer programmers / technicians, BUT for most people who have little knowledge it can be the key to salvation when the registry and other settings become fouled up.
If Microsoft and other programmers had done their work properly and set their programs to remove the garbage left behind then programs like these would not be needed
I agree whole heartedly with you they can be fraught with danger BUT in the large majority of cases they will get the un initiated out of trouble without having the expense of taking it to the local repair tech who probably uses one of these programs and charges a fortune, if it fails for him he charges accordingly to reinstall Windows and who is to challenge his diagnosis?
If it fails then it is a trip to the tech and pay out BUT in most cases it will get them back in business.
My experience is 42 years in electronics, Broadband Radio / TV Communications and Programming, not with Microsoft but in defence projects

            Hi Barry

            Hi Barry,
This is fun, I agree with you, for me it is quicker to edit the registry myself, I do understand people that have little or no computer knowledge at all needing programs like this, But and a big but, if programers and software engineers wrote third party programs properly we wouldn't need these reg cleaning progams, alot of third party companies uninstallers are designed to leave file behind in the registery, this has been a problem for many years now Barry, You will find with properly written software his is not the case, but hey who can tell these days the way things are going.

            Cheers
            Steve

P.S Also I shouldn't complain really it keeps me in buiness, Keep the cheap software coming....

                To Barry

                Hi Barry,
Just a quick question, What do you think of the Boris FX software, I have been thinking about buying it, the Boris FX 9.2 Blue. I know you use the red, but do you get a lot of use for it?

                Cheers

Boris is good for propping up some of the Edius shortcommings ie manipulating Photo's but that needs to be done outside Edius.
Now Anton has come up with the solution of the incorrect field order in HD it can be used without any problems.
It does require intensive rendering, it is certainly not real time.
Besides the Photo manipulation I use it quite often to eliminate power lines from a clip (Wire removal) or eliminate a dust spec (Clone) from the lens when I have become lazy and in post there is that obtrusive dark spot in the sky.
I rarely use it for transitions, but it has been useful for adding sparkle to a water scene, but Vitascene is just as good for that and is in realtime!
For Titles and scrolling credits it is brilliant as it has the 1:2:1 pulldown that eliminates shimmering of the text.
All titles I do outside Edius and export in CanopusHQ with a transparent alpha background, others use it inside Edius but because of the intensive rendering required I prefer to do it outside
                  Regards Barry

                    Thank's

I think I might just stick with Vitascene, I have done a few reviews for Prodad and they gave me all there software i.e Heroglyph, Vitascene, Mercalli, for free, I think I will save my self some money and not buy Boris FX.
Thanks Barry for the info mate.

                    cheers

I'm not saying that a program won't inadvertantly remove a registry entry that may be needed, but that's an entirely different issue, a bug. What I disagreed with is the assertion that registry cleaners can only process registry entries for programs that they know about. A program that understands the concept of Program IDs, Class IDs and Interface IDs that are kept under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT can detect and fix generic types of registry problems.

As for my background, I too have 25 years of experience in the business, having worked on everything from embedded systems and a BIOS for a PC clone, games, database applications, electronic payment backends, remote control software, newspaper publishing software, data recovery tools, and countless other odds and ends. I am currently a Principal Software Engineer for a security software vendor.
