  • Linking (joining) 2 (or more) 2MP4 files

    Hello EdiUsers,

Some client gives me "4" MP4 files (from their camera) to join it together.

In Edius timeline I suppose Edius decompress and I have to export a new file so Edius re-compress... with the risk of loosing quality.

Is there another solution with Edius or any "quality" programm to join without any change of data (simple copy of data) to maintain genuine quality.

    Thanks in advance

I think this may work for you https://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tmsr6.html. I think TMPGenc MW7 will do this too.

Edit: just found out MW7 does not do this fast render.

be very careful with joiners as it could be that your mp4 files are of varying frame rates etc.

the loss in EDIUS is minimal and not noticeable to the eye

Agreed, I really don't understand the fear everyone had of transcoding. If the encoder is good and you don't reduce the bitrates the loss is not noticeable, and often not measurable on a scope.

I work in a post production facility doing tv and movies. We, (as in the industry, not only my facility), have no problems transcoding to a better codec when working (ie. convert an h264 drone shot into prores), because the prores file will retain quality longer than the h264 file will if you are doing any manipulation to it (plugins and/or edits). Technically it will never be better than the original, but it will stay as close to the original as possible through the manipulations because the frames are fully encoded and not long GOP, which are more prone to encode/decode errors.

I know that is not what Yvonne is doing in this case, but I think it helps to re-enforce Anton's point of the loss not being noticeable, and as I said, often not even measurable.

The great thing is that you can always do a test encode from EDIUS and check it out. Better than always being concerned about a theoretical best quality. Export and measure and watch.

              Too many best quality threads.:)
