  • Thumb drive delivery

I have a client who wants their wedding on a thumbdrive is there a method for doing this? I was just going to render it to h.264 and drop it on a drive. Is there a better way?

If you want a menu, I used Auto Run Max when I did my tutorials.
    https://www.indigorose.com/autorun-max/

Here is a screen shot of the main menu of my Vistitle Tutorials.
Main Menu Tutorials with Auto Run Max.jpg

There is a learning curve and time factor to consider with this method. For a single play item and depending on what type of device or devices it will be played on, I would just drop the file onto the thumbdrive.

If it is to be viewed mainly on their smart TV, I would verify the television's playback specifications prior to creating the file for them.

Also, I would tell them to make a backup of the file on their computer just in case the thumb drive fails.

Read more about SamLogic USB Menu Creator
I have been using Sam Logic Menu Creator to put menus on my concert productions (on USB) for years now. A simple program that works well for me.

are these menus seen on a TV with USB playback? If so, how does a user click a particular menu button?

I just tried my tutorials on my LG and it is recognized, but nothing is accessible.
I'm pretty sure this has to do with the drive containing multiple menus and videos.

All great ideas thanks, So could this be a way to deliver 4K on a 4K smart TV?

It will depend on the TV's playback specs. Many require H.265 for playback.
I would bypass the menu and allow the television's playback module to handle all of that.
I know that my LG doesn't have a problem with H.264 or H.265 files. When it gets to 4K 60p, it does prefer H.265.

yes, i am thinking this one too, how to create a menu and then plug usb to smart tv and use remote control to select menu button... and play instead of 1 file in usb and play not show menu

It's worth bearing in mind that none of these menu system based file options will work on most TVs. There is no standard like there is with DVD etc. Even files with simple chapter markers can be hit or miss.

The safest thing to do is to just create a single MP4 file, using X264 will give the best picture quality at relatively low bitrates, which is important as it will guarantee better playback compatibility across many different USB devices and interfaces.

I wouldn't use h.265 files even for UHD, many older UHD TVs won't play them.

Using h.264 high profile level 4.1 will be a safe bet. I also use those settings for UHD. Despite the fact that those profile and level settings are not meant to encompass UHD, I've never had any issues across any UHD TVs with them and many HD TVs will play them scaled down.

Basically, export a HQ/X file from Edius, encode to h.264/MP4 in HandBrake using the X264 encoder, my settings work if you'd like to try them and then just copy to a USB flash drive for delivery.

I've done a number of posts describing how to get the best possible quality.

and add into a mix that TV USB is a mish mash of even what format it will read. My Samsungs read exFat- My LG in the studio wont- hence I always format NTFS.

                      Here is what I do.

When project is finished I create a MP4 with Edius (main) and verify that the final file is not exceeding the 4GB limitation of FAT32 on USB2.
This is a universal parameters that work on ALL SmartTV.
                      Why these parameters ?

Some SmartTV do not accept USB3 or NTFS format. So, because I don't have time to examine each SmartTV for each client... I decide to use parameters (old) that works everywhere.

So a wedding of 1H30min has to be compressed to be under the 4GB files.

But 1h30 may be to long on a single file and looking for a particular sequence is fastidious with the forward acceleration of the remote. So....

                      The menu :

I put in/out markers for each sequence of the day and create MP4's. So the wedding is divided in several files not to long (giving to each a particular name but with a order numer : 01-Last prepartion - 02-Arrival of the guest - 03-Arrival of the Girl....).

Finaly : I copy all these files on the Thumdrive (main directory or sub-folder).
Putting it in a SmartTV....selecting the drive... and all files will appears on screen. Easy to select with the remote. When a file is finished and depending the parameters selected on the TV, it goes to the next or come back to the list.

All my client are happy with that and it do not need to learn a menu software

This is kinda exciting to me though. 1. I may be able to deliver 4K in the near future and 2. I may not have to waste discs as much, I can get a gross of thumbdrives with my company on it and deliver on that:)

I do exactly the same but I use USB3 thumb drives because they are 5 times faster to transfer files to. It takes 1 hour to fill a 16GB drive when using USB2 and only 12min with USB3. I make up to 300 USB per customer when it comes to the end of year dance concerts, so USB2 is out of the question

I never heard of a TV that rejects USB3

In fact, in my house I have 2 SmartTV's. Both accept the USB3.... so, again right you are. It's just that a client has problem to read the USB3 on his living room TV. After a test on his sleeproom TV, it was working.... may be a bad conclusion from my side.

In fact also, I do as you, using USB3... and don't have any other complain.

It seems that NTFS is not easy to read on every TV. So I prefer to stay on FAT32 with the respect of 4 GB limitation per file.
