  • Handbrake question

I am not sure if I can ask this question here, but I know a lot of us use this program.

I had a video exported from Edius 8WG via the exporter 264/AVC function. The result was a 86Mb file for a small video (about 1 min) taken with a smartphone. The customer wanted to upload the movi to Facebook after a few modifications (I did those with E8WG)

Before uploading to Facebook I used Handbrake to minimize the file (went from 86 Mb to 8 Mb). I used AAC, 160kb/s, samplerate 44,1kHz, stereo. The small file sounds ok before uploading (using the Windows Media Player), but after uploading to Facebook it sounds different. A bit metal-like. It seems Facebook does something with the sound.

Did I make a mistake with these settings for audio?

video is 48k, never choose 44.1k

also, in Handbrake, use 256 bitrate for audio

also, be sure you use constant frame rate in Handbrake, never ever the default of variable

      Anton,

Thanks, I will give it a go. Can you help me with the following:

Facebook suggests 44,1 kHz. Did you find out that 48kHz is better?

Does variable bitrate instead of constant bitrate also influence sound? I always thought this was only about picture quality.

      Chris

Edit: I tried these settings. It still sounds not good on Facebook. I tried a few different things only to find out that the original file recorded with a rather cheap smartphone is not good. It looks and sounds ok via the Windows media player, but after upload to Facebook it had this metal-like sound. I did the following to solve thew problem: loaded the file into Edius 8WG, export via 264/AVC at 2Mb/s and uploaded to Facebook. It does not look great, but the sound is o.k. and for this recording, sound (the spoken message) is more important. Next time the customer will use another smartphone for his spontaneous recordings.

Facebook have no clue about video, video is and has always used 48k

ignore the 44.1k and all will be well

44.1k is sometimes used by the fruit software users but not in Windows land other than for CD audio disks

Facebook use extremely low bitrates, more so than most other streaming sites. No matter how good your upload, facebook will smash it to bits, both audio and video.

If you are wanting to use facebook with a video file, you are best using youtube for the video and link/embed it into your facebook page.

Nearly all web streaming sites compress your upload. So you are best uploading the highest bitrate file you can get away with, using the highest quality resolution and codec that's compatible with where you are uploading to.

Is your Robot three laws safe?

              Good to know, thanks.

I was used to edit full-HD clips, always the same type and always output to BD. Now I have to do different things and suddenly there is a lot to learn. I am happy we have this forum.
