  • Noise reduction crashes Edius 7.5 every time

I have some IPhone 6 plus footage which was taken in poor lighting. It has been tweaked for contrast by adding another layer on top and using the screen filter on the top layer and brightness /contrast on the top layer. The next job is to render and add to timeline. Done. Now we need to do something about noise reduction.

Using Boris RED 5.51 and BCC9 Noise reduction on an 11 minute peice of video it estimates 2 hours to render and add to timeline.

NewBlue noise reduction suggests it is going to take 20 hours to render on system 4 so I opted for the Boris RED method.

The Boris RED filter render starts off ok but after about 20 minutes Edius crashes and it has done this 3 times now so that isn't going to work.

The event viewer produces the following info;-

Its a progressive project and I note Boris was set to export Interlaced. Running it again with Open GL on and it has made 22 minutes of 3 hours so far.

Nope 33 minutes in and it stops with Boris RED.

            Very frustrating.

The New Blue one went 1.5 hours of 20 but was stopped by me in order to try a quicker one.

Boris render in EDIUS matches your project setting, it has nothing to do with its own settings when used in standalone

could it be that you have too many cores for Boris?

                Hmm yes could be

New Blue only works with GPU on up to 32 logical cores in Edius, but it works fine in Premiere Pro with 64 cores.

Open GL in Boris RED is only used for previewing certain effects as you create them.
It has nothing to do with the actual final rendering.

. . . and as you suggested early in this thread about turning OGL off - that was good advice.
With the speed of computers in general (CPU/GPU etc. etc.) it is doubtful that using open GL should be necessary anymore.

Well the solution was to buy Neat 4 Which works well although not quick.

An 11 minute piece takes 2.5 hours, and yes I did run the Neat Optimisation.

                          was the result good?

the time taken seems long, but I think neatvideo benefits from fast graphics cards and your Q 3800 is not, nor is my Q 4000

a GTX 980 or 990 will leave them for dead
