Sorry I can't see the relationship. Spurs engine is not a codec it is a hardware accelerator, a co-processor, it has nothing to do with encoding it just does it faster than the bare CPU.
I have now carried out a comparison there is no difference, both encodes are excellent.

You will see a huge difference at lower bitrate settings!
X264 can do encodes at potentially higher quality as any other codec implementation around.
Even if H264 is a codec standard, it does not mean that every encoder gives the same result by same parameters.
Due to the different optimizations in different implementations, each engine gives different encoding quality.
The SPURS engine is just one of many implementations & it gives good results on higher bitrates.

Sorry I still cant see what you are all going on about Spurs Engine has nothing to do with codecs it is a co-processor, will someone who really knows about computing and co-processors please come in here; Anton? even a TMPg expert!

It is simple as the other states the X264 engine cannot be accelerated by the spurs engine.
You use the spur engine H.264 which can be accelerated.
So even if they both encode H.264 the engine is different.

X.264 is open source H.264 is licensed.

Hi everyone, I purchased the plug-in once the colour bug was fixed and just wanted to give an update.

It comes equipped with working templates for PAL and NTSC Blu-ray but beware there are non for 1080p24 (23.976) or 1080p50p. It took me the best part of a week to figure out how to make my own templates for these formats. It became easier once I understood how TMPGEnc's settings names correlated to the names used by x264 command line encoder. For instance I am quite a perfectionist when it comes to picture quality and I had always used "--tune film" in my previous x264 settings to get the finest image, this setting is intended for high-bitrate/high-quality movie content such as most of us aspire to shoot! Well, lower deblocking is used here (psy tuning --deblock -1:-1 --psy-rd <unset>:0.15)

Ok, this can be done in the plug-in's advanced settings, to emulate "tune film", Deblocking settings ON, filter alpha coefficient: -1 and filter beta coefficient: -1. Psy rate distortion strength: 1.
That got fine details back into my difficult to encode splashing water scene. Well, together with a few other settings and being the ever so fussy type :) I also changed to constant quality VBR mode, rather than trying to save every last byte of space. So this is also faster since it's a single pass. I set quality to "65", (note, not the same scale as equivalent --crf number in x264 settings).

This and other things gives me the quality I was used to seeing using MeGui but that needed a tiresome intermediate file from Edius and the use of tsMuxer to recombine audio and video.

I have now made much use of the plug-in and also of Edius 7's Disc burner. Very nice to write the files from the plug-in's output directly to disc or save them up and add several for Disc burner to add a menu and burn directly, this is an excellent time saver for my purpose.

BTW, while the standard BD templates do not give access to all the advanced settings available in the generic template it's easy to get to these if you save you own custom setting template from the unaltered standard one and then open it in the generic template. Voila!

If anyone wants to test my 24p and/or 50p settings they are all in my notebook file but beware I am not a qualified compressionist ;)

It's kind of logical that a 1080p50p template is lacking...it's not in the BD standard.

Hmm, well I suppose I could have made that paragraph a bit clearer.

For 1080p50 I was not specifically meaning a "BD" template, just a ready made template for people who want to play this format in all it's glory from a media player box, rather than from a disc.

If a template had been provided that just went as far as setting output stream type to MPEG-2 Transport (AVCHD), with high profile, level 4.2 it would have covered the basics needed.

No big deal though.. I suspect most users will have a certain amount of knowledge of these things anyway.

Great to hear its working at last but I still can't get over the online authorisation! I work in an environment where company policy does not allow certain online communications for security reasons and this is a deal killer for TPMG and Adobe CC. GV please don't ever do this!
