  • Data buffer under run message. Guidance please-

    Hi all,
I am using Corel DVD movie factory to produce a blu ray conversion from some VHS collations I have. All is captured via Edius OK and output as HQ AVI . The file is 19 GB and plays back fine on the computer.

When I try to burn a blu ray I eventually get this message:

"Data buffer underun. The computer may be too busy with other tasks or may not have enough power to keep the specified burn speed".

My machine is reasonably specced and is running no other program. I cannot see anywhere in the DVD movie factory, a chance to change the write speed.

I now have trashed 3 discs at $8 each and don't want to waste more. My blu Ray writer is an ASUS BW-12 B1LT. The Asus site does not show any firmware updates ( or anything else to support this drive that I could find.)

I would appreciate any thoughts on what I can do to fix this. Thanks in advance guys.

    1. Get some BD-RE disks for testing and verifying your BD projects. I always create ISO images of my projects that I burn to BD-REs for testing menus, encoding quality etc., and only when I'm satisfied do I burn to BD-R. I use the same ISO images I burned to the BD-RE media so I don't have to re-encode and know exactly what I'll be getting.

    2. If you have any AV software installed, disconnect from the Internet and temporarily try stopping or disabling the AV software. Some AV software cannot be completely stopped or disabled.

    3. Check for updates to Movie Factory in case there is an updated burning engine.

    4. Try lowering the burning speed if that is an option.

    5. Try burning with another program, such as ImgBurn. It's free and very capable.

ahhh, the famous buffer underun problem caused by encoders where the minimum bitrate can't be set in case of VBR encoding

      in that case, choose CBR

Thoff, Strangely that's exactly what I did- Recorded on a rewritable disc to check first- all good, so tried with a write once disc and got the crappy christmas message! (3 times!!!)

Anton, that makes sense of course but I can't find a way to change the cbr/vbr rate in Movie factory. Maybe I need to upgrade to some other authoring package, although this has served me well for some years. (although this is the first time I have tried such a big blu ray file.)

Maybe imgburn is worth a try initially. I have heard lots of good reports. Alternatively, I do have TMPgenc mastering works 5 , so maybe the TMP authoring package would make sense.

Issues like these are why I use separate programs for each function.
          Edit(Edius 6.52)>Encode(TMPGE MW5)>Author(Encore CS6)>Burn(Imgburn)

Relying on a single program to do the job of several is often met with frustration.

One possible reason..... You are converting VHS video and you are probably using a low bit rate such as if it were for DVD like 9Mb/s- but you are encoding in HD for Blu-ray? This may lead to encoding VBV Buffer underflow with default settings. Try using maximum bit rate 32Mb/s just for my sake.
            Please provide all encoding parameters.

Don;t use DVDMovieFactory to make your Bluray file from an Avi, the quality is not as good as below
BUT there are a couple of traps

1: Export a Bluray Mpeg from Edius with the following

                Segment Encode
                Quality/Speed - SuperFine
                VBR
                Avge - 25M
                Max - 37M
                Dolby Ac3 - 384kb

                Extended Settings
                Upper Field
                Chroma Format - 4:2:0
Profile & Level - [email protected]
Picture Count - 15 for NTSC - 12 for PAL
                I use Closed GOP

Open MovieFactory and click on the bottom left Icon (Looks like a page)
                Select Disk Template Manager

                Setup as below

When burning to disk select either or both "Create Disk" and or "Create Bluray folder", de select eveything else
This should take no time to produce the folder and write the disk
IF the information above the progress says "Encoding no compliant file" then something is wrong with the file and the result will not be as good

Providing the "Disk Template" setting is "HIGHER" than the file Max bit rate all should be OK

I dont use H264 as the max bit rate allowed is 20M for a Bluray disk with MovieFactory, quality seems the same from an Edius generated file but horrible from Movie Factory, PLUS on my machine mpeg is faster as I dont have Quicksinc

                Regards Barry

Thanks for that Barry, That is something new to me.I will follow your advice through- very much appreciated.

I have never been asked for a blu Ray output in six years down here, so my experience is er--sort of zero( Now have to source some more discs as none available here in Dunedin!!-online purchase coming up I guess)

                    No worries Rod
Forgot to mention there are 2 Bluray type disk settings so best to set both as above
"Bluray Standard" and "BD-J" the latter comes into effect when you select the POP out menus using Java script
