  • Way to Create a Moving Map Journey

I`m editing our recent 3 week trip to China & I would like to be able to show the journey between cities via a map as a background with a trail showing the journey, any ideas guys?

Heroglyph or Vistitle but you can also do it in EDIUS without plugs.

    Look at this thread:

    Post 2 and 3

You can also use the Mask filter to do a reveal of curved paths.

I've just done exactly same thing, also with a recent trip accross China and central Asia.
I just Used photoshop to create the map. Make it quite large, around 4000px across so you can zoom in on it an not lose resolution. Do your map with many separate layers, then save: the background by itself; the layers containing the route and names separately with the background turned off (transparent).
Then just stack them on top of each other and use the crop function in the layout tool to reveal the route.
Time consuming but once you get the hang of it its easy.
Tip: Use NASA's sattelite maps, as far as I can tell they are for free and open use. All other maps are copyrighted (including Google's)

Thanks Shamo, did you travel alone or with a tour group like Wendy Wu? We had 16 Aussies on ours, breat bunch of guys!
I`ve got Heroglyph 2.6 on my edit suite, trouble is I can`t see the timeline graphic whilst editing the route within HG unless someone knows how I can switch the function on. What I`ve done is to use the animation feature in TitleMotion Pro to draw the route as I can see the map through TM`s interface.

Heroglyph 4.0 let's you import the image into the titler on which to draw the path.

In 2.6 you can import a map or graphic etc into the titler & draw a route, that isn`t the problem! Most title packages allow you to see the timeline whilst working within the title pane itself, if you create a title in QuickTitle for instance, you can see the result in your client monitor. Another thing is that HG vers 4 does not support transparency within the HG editing pane on Edius 6 but it does in Edius 6.5 (I`m told that`s because 6.5 has better support for alpha channels)

I have output to monitor in H4 at points in the construction. I have output to monitor with Vistitle during the whole thing.

So, lets clarify this! In Edius 6 on V1 I have a video/graphic, I place a Heroglyph title on V2, I then double click the HG title which opens the HG title pane window, can you see, whilst in the HG title pane, the video or graphic that is on V1? If so, you can then place your text or route in the position you want.
In my case, I can`t see the video/graphic on V1 therefore, placement is hit or miss!

Nope we always travel independantly, did come accross some Wendy Wu people in Kashgar, they seem like a good co.
I've put together some of my maps that I created just recently.

The first 3 are just photoshop using layers and transparency and then the layouter in Edius. The last one I did in good ol Canopus Imaginate. This is still a great program, you can throw huge files at it, psd, tga etc and do massive zooms then render to 1920x1080 even with alpha. I used NB titler pro for the Uzbek title but could not be bothered using it for trails. titler pro program is so buggy and time consuming. Some times simple is better.
I'm hoping I'll get some feedback on this as I'm no expert and just make it up as I go... all suggestions of better content and workflow are MUCH appreciated.
Last tip, use large image files and set project settings to 4k, use layouter and render them back to 2k and you get tack sharp zooms.

                    V1 has a green arrow
V2 has a solid red arrow-anything to do with the Title itself has a solid red arrow

You can clearly see the title in the Edius preview window over top of the video. This also goes out to external monitor if you have a GV card. New Blue works the same way.
Vistitle will show a live preview within the assembly area. You can also change that to a solid color.

Thanks Guys, love the maps Shamo! Jerry, looks like you`re using Edius 6.5 which as I said before, HG 4 works with Edius 6.5, however, HG 4 doesn`t work in this way with Edius 6 & this fact was confirmed by Uwe Wenz of Prodad
