  • Any decent background music and sound effects for Edius projects?

I am new to using background music and sound effects for projects outside educational needs. What is the best way to get decent background music & sound effects for small commercial projects (commercial educational videos and various events)?

One resource listing music sites is: http://www.courvo.biz/2010/05/50-roy...sic-sites.html Any comments and recommendations?

I have had experience purchasing from www.freeplaymusic.com in the past. Although prices are negotiable at freeplaymusic it takes time to negotiate and they want to know both number of copies and number of viewers on the Internet that are often difficult to predict. In the end the license was not exactly cheap as a project was very small. License also had a lot of various conditions.

    Is there any easier route?

Are there any decent background music collections on CD or DVD you’d recommend?

Any highly recommended free resources for nonprofit work?

Some people refer to programs for easy music and sound creation on a computer. Is this route realistic for a newbie in music creation?

I've use some www.Music2Hues.com material for promos.

As with any music synced to video, one has to be selective about the material and how it is integrated wit the image and the message you want to convey to the viewer.

I use digital juice mostly. smartsound a little (I haven't got many discs, and I'm pretty sick of what I've got).
In the past I used to negotiate licencing, but it's just not worth it. How can you know how many 'hits' a youtube clip might get? How many years you may be asked to duplicate the same dvd? And it wasn't cheap either- getting the royalty sorted with the music solves that.
              Must try music2hues...

Home: Canon HV20 and Panasonic GH1 (hacked); Neo 3.01 on HP elitebook 8440p i7 and Neo 1 on homemade dualcore desktop.

Thanks for sharing your favorite resources, commenting and giving hints. I will gladly explore all of your favorites after returning home after three days.

"Buy once and use in all your projects" option seems most favorable; no more negotiation. Interesting to note that music2hues, digital juice, smartsound have shown up more than once. These then will go to the top of the list with all the others following.

Proscores seems to be interesting software and can be integrated with Sony Vegas. It includes 50 sound tracks and training to start, but I suspect customization may require some musical training …

                  Not important now but may change in future;
does "By once and use in all your projects" often cover broadcasting too?

So far as the three you mentioned
Smartsound, digital Juice and Music2Hues all are perfect for Broadcast, no problems

It depends on your taste or what you are after, digital juice has only a small number of melodies
Smartsound has the greatest range, I have 30+ disks and they have a loyalty system where the price decreases with increased sales for the year, where the year starts I have no idea but it has reduced the cost

another that just came to mind is "Video Blocks" and has downloadable video clips as well some really useful and all copyright free, used commercially !

Jewelbeat is cheap at 99c per song but you get what you pay for.
I like songfreedom and musicbed for their great range of qulaity contermporary music. I also use sonicfire pro, but it has it's limitations.

                        Just an addendum:
Bluetongue mentioned a site called videoblocks earlier on. I had a look through the site and it looks great and cheap too......the catch (there's always a catch)
If you read their huge disclaimer page https://www.videoblocks.com/agreement.html You will see that it is NOT for commercial use of any type..

Ok...queried the guys at videoblocks and got this lengthy reply, anyone a lawyer out there to interperit this? :)

                        "Hello,

You may use the Stock Files for nearly any project, including feature films, broadcast,
commercial, industrial, educational video, print projects, multimedia, games, and the internet, but
solely to the extent the Stock File is incorporated into any work with substantial value added by you
such that transformed or derivative work is not recognizable as the Stock File nor is the Stock File capable
of being downloaded, extracted or accessed by a third party as a stand-alone file (satisfaction of these
conditions will constitute the work as a “Derivative Work” for the purposes of this Agreement). Thus, you
could incorporate Stock Files in Derivative Works that include promotional materials, packaging, web
page design, broadcast, products for sale, electronic and print publication, comps, and layouts."

Sounds like they are saying you can use it as long as no one looking at the final product can recognize the stock material or tell that you used it. Or if you steal this work, and I can't tell you stole it, you didn't steal it.

                          Interesting logic.

In a short time you can make a nice score in sonic fire pro software.
If you intend to use smart sound I can highly recommend the strata series, they are multitrack recordings and besides cutting to any length (as with all their series) you can remix the 'sound' by adjusting certain instruments and rearrange the entire feel of a song.

While it's not cheap to own a wide verity of content, once purchased many times used, there sound effects are few and weak, you'll need to look elsewhere for that.

It seems that there are additional license cost for 'serious feature films' (fine print included with certain tracks) but then again, those highend productions won't use anything else then a orchestra me thinks :)

With certain NLE's it can work seamless and roundtrip for fast turnover times, with Edius you'll need to export a video file and import that in sonic fire pro to cut to image but works fine that way.
