  • Recommended CPU for Edius X

Planning to get a new pc but not sure if I have to go back to the intel route for QuickSync or stay with amd, I have used a amd 1950x for the past 4 years and eventhough it currently is still powerfull enough for my needs there is one single unsolved issue that is having a big impact on rendertimes, I still get a black frame in my footage on export which I have reported here longer time ago, it is still random, sometime it doesn't happen but often there are one or 2 black frames in random places.

I have tried evertyhing I could to troubleshoot but it keeps appearing, my workflow in "solving" this is to first export to a hxqavi, then run a ffmpeg script to locate the black frames, then bring the hqxavi back in post and lay it on top of the edit, cut out the blackframes so that the black frame is replaced by the native footage and export again to a hqxavi, then I can use that hqxavi to render my mp4's.

That can add a few hours extra time for each project because otherwise I would just export directly to a mp4 and be done with it.

It's been four years now that I have managed like this but it is time to move on and get me a new pc, some posts here however don't look very promising when it comes to quicksync where [email protected] has reported that uhd750 uhd770 don't work well with Edius x leading to poor performance or a crash. The new I9 12900k looks promising but not if Edius x has issues with the integrated GPU.

Then there are the processors that have no quicksync, either from intel or amd, from testresults reported here it looks like edius benefits more from extra cores instead of a higher corespeed, I also see on my system that all 16 cores are used well for either playback or export.

Almost every project I do has a multicam of 4 to 5 camera's in 4K 25p 100mbs 4:2:0 and the files are on a M.2 drive, my 1950x can handle this in realtime at full preview quality.

Personally I lean towards getting the 5950x but if anyone has another tried and tested recommendation that would be great.

    https://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/...crash-on-edius

The avx2 performance of AMD 1950x is low, only about 35% of that of 5950x.Because the two kernel AVX units of 1950x form avx2, the efficiency is low。
You can refer to my post. Ediusx does not support 11th or 12th igpu. igpu will crash ediusx. If you really want to change your computer, please buy R9 5950x and Intel DG2 graphics cards。Igpu only works for h265 4K 4:2:0, and the performance of other formats is not as good as AMD processor decoding.I'm disappointed with the performance of the 12th generation core i9 12900k with ddr5 which is only a little better than the R9 5950x with ddr4, less than 10%. But the price of the whole computer has doubled.

Thx for the response, I"m a bit surprised that GV is not responding to these compatibility issues. Anyways, the 5950x does seem like a good investment then. This time I won't be spending as much as 4 years ago, I managed to configure a complete pc at the computerstore where I got my last pc from with a 5950x and 32gb of memory for exactly 1500euro, I did pick the cheapest GPU (a gt710) so the computerstore can build the pc but plan to swap that one with my gtx 1060 6gb that is in my current pc and I normally can transfer my windows 10 pro license to that new pc as well. A few other components like my M.2 drives can also be moved to the new system so saving some money there. Next year I"ll look out for a new GPU once the prices (hopefully) have dropped to a normal level.

Ryzen 6000 CPU's are slated for January 2022. Wait until then to purchase anything. At least you can compare the latest
offerings from Intel and AMD. Evidently, DDR-5 is supported in the 6000 series.
By then, we should have a Windows 11 compliant Edius X available (which is needed for Alder Lake).

Thanks for the tip Jerry, In pc land there is always something new and better just around the corner :) When I got my 1950x it was also just released, I had a lot of issues in the beginning getting it up to speed and had to deep dive into overclockersforums to get solutions for my disappointing results. There where also some bios updates the following months and eventually I managed to get it up to speed. I'm not sure if I want to go through this again.

Then there is price, a just released processor which probably needs a new motherboard and ddr5 memory will all add significantly to the price, the 5950x however is 25% cheaper then what I paid for my 1950x 4 years ago! Then there is compatibility issues, there are a few examples here that show that Edius is picky when it comes to certain cpu configurations, same applies for AMD processors and windows 11 which also had problems, that just wants me to stay with win 10 as long as I can.

If it wasn't for my black frame issue I would continue to use my 1950x, it handles 4 to 5 camera's in a multicam and exports more then fast enough, I"m only tired of having to spend so much extra time to make sure my clients get their films without that black frame, I have some budget available now and 1500euro to make that transition is not that expensive.

If anyone has some other suggestions for a CPU, I"m still interested to hear some real life experience.

@ [email protected], you do have a 5950x, how has your experience with it been so far?

I'm curious how the tests were performed on the 12th Gen chip.
It was never revealed that the test was with a required Windows 11. Also, a Windows 11 compliant version of Edius X would be required.
Engineering samples are not the same as release versions.

Thx, I see the i9-10850K is not being sold anymore in the pc store where I will be ordering from, probably because it's 10th gen? I see it has UHD 630 which might explain why you don't have any issues as UHD750 and 770 don't seem to work well with Edius acc to [email protected].

I just also found out a extensive discussion took place beginning this year about the same question I have (Edius X and AMD 5950X and 5900X CPUs - Grass Valley Forums) but that didn't bring much to the table either, it looks like we are on our own to experience what works or not...

Looking at Anton's signature his latest buid is a i9 9960X which doesn't have quicksync and if I recall right he never was a fan of using quicksync, since he also sells turnkey systems I think it's safer just to follow him and go for CPU power with at least 16 cores :) Currently my mind is set on the 5950x unless someone here tells me that also is not working well with edius.

and yes, you missed me from the forum for a while, will be dropping in now and then, probaly to complain again when I get my new pc :)

For any Intel processor product, I can obtain engineering samples 2-4 months in advance. To be exact, lend it to me. If they count the inventory, I will return it.
In February, the problem of the 11th igpu processor was ignored. It was really wonderful to delay the problem of very poor performance until now, and it crashed directly.

Can I ask how your 5950x is performing? Does edius make good use of all cores?

I was referring to the 12th Gen tests you performed. Did you use a release version of Win 11 and a compliant Win 11 version of Edius X?
If neither were used, the test results are suspect.

I recently had a similar indecision. I've come to the conclusion that the most logical option is the 10th generation i9 10900K. I am very happy with my choice now.

I was going to use some parts from the old system, so I didn't think of switching to the new generation.

In addition, 12th generation Intel processors and DDR5 memory are still very new, it is possible to have problems with applications.
Technical problems may arise in the workflow, which means a waste of time and money, and even more importantly, it can cause loss of reputation.
The next generation will probably be compatible with Windows 11 to work at full performance, it is still very new in windows 11, it will be stable after a few updates.
These will improve over time, but it is not known how Edius will follow all these developments. QS-based performance issues are also known in the 11th generation.

I seem to have said before that Intel has used the new SDK. No matter what system or driver is used, EDIUS will not be called correctly.Amd NVIDIA will not easily replace the SDK interface. I don't know why EDIUS's recent work is to adapt to Intel SDK.number of users with 11th and 12th igpu is very small, and EDIUS is doing useless work.I believe that any user with a computer will have at least one AMD or NVIDIA GPU instead of Intel igpu

This is what I experienced when I got the 1950x, it was just released when I got it and it took me months to get it up and running like it should, furthermore I saw a big performance jump between edius 8 and 9 in encoding speeds as NLE manufacturers also take a while catching up to new hardware, in this case the big jump in nr of cores on a processor.

With AMD processors, the situation can be a little more complicated. Multi-core is a big leap, besides that in the ryzen series have been developing processors on the same socket for a long time, some motherboard brands have been slow to update their existing bios. When users thought that it was compatible with their processors and bought motherboards, they experienced performance and crash problems.

I think it is safe to say that one year after the releasedate of the 5950x all motherboards have received the necessary updates to make them stable. At least I hope so :)

Your tests were on Windows 10 and to be fair to the 12th Gen, should be on Windows 11 with a Windows 11 compatible version of Edius X.
Also, you were supposed to be testing the chip and not complaining about the lack of discrete GPU assist in Edius.
I want discrete GPU assist, but in this test scenario it really doesn't come into play.
Users who purchase the 'K' series chips want the iGPU and are more interested in the tests for that process.....and without bias.
There are more owners of systems with iGPU's included than you are evidently aware.

From the many tests I've seen of the 12900K , 12700K, and the 12600k, the chip is fast. Since Edius is CPU driven at this time, the chip
should be a perfect fit for Edius. Until we can get some real world tests on Windows 11 and a compatible Edius X,
those specifics are needed for a true comparison.
