  • New Computer

Built a new computer. Only difference between the new and the old is a faster processor. My question is will Edius 7 work if I restore the new computer from a backup or will I have to re-install from scratch. Thanks in advance.

It just might. Will take about 15 minutes to check.
If it fails boot from your Win Disc and then Shift+F10.
Use Diskpart to clean your system disk of all traces of your attempt to restore the image, then load Windows the hard way.

Before starting ensure you have de-activated all programs & plugins that require de-activation.

    Best of luck G

if you created a Win7 image, then it will work, no need to activate anything

however, if Windows detects that 2 or 3 hardware changes took place, it may ask you to reactivate windows, which happens by clicking activate online, if it says too many activations, you phone them and talk to a robot to renew the activation

I have upgraded twice in the last couple of years.First processor upgrade from i7 2600k to i7 3770k on the same motherboard memory etc.Did nothing for this and all worked OK with no reregistering. Lately upgraded motherboard, processor and memory and then had to register everything !! Microsoft was quick and almost automatic. Reloaded Edius and selected repair, Adobe CS6 just reregistered with serial numbers same for Sony software.

I moved the old motherboard down to my second system and did the same.Have Edius 6.08 on that and found it easier to uninstall and install again. Other software just needed reregistering.

Usually when you put in a new motherboard a clean install is the best if you use the system for an NLE.
Chipset drivers and such much be installed. Those will most likely be different.
For any NLE and Daw this is often recommended for optimal system performance.

Just because it will work, doesn't mean it is the best method of doing things. As Steve pointed out, anytime you move to a new motherboard, it is always best to do a fresh install. I believe that is true even if you are not using an NLE.
If you are just changing out a motherboard for an exact replacement, you shouldn't have any issues.

Yes Steve,I know a clean install is the best but the thought of installing all the software put me off. I had a little bit of problem not watching what the motherboard install of drivers were , myfault, but in the end it was fine. Just changing the cpu wasno problem.

Just to let everyone know I restored from a backup. I had to register Edius, did that with no problem. All of the other programs and plug-ins work fine. I back up my systems once a week using "Acronis".

Acronics does not restore the EDIUS license unless you choose the bit by bit option which takes a long time, I could have warned you about that, the Win7 image tool does restore all licenses, a Win7 image contains an exact copy of the entire hard disk and the whole process takes usually less than 10min. In fact I will be doing it later today when my new Samsung 850 Pro arrives

You will like the 850 Anton. I get much faster write speeds with mine as compared to the 840.

As I mentioned for just a processor change I did nothing and just booted up again with all working. I did the same for increasing my RAM from 8 to 16G. I do not think Windows requires license check for just one of the main components changed at a time. Lots of drivers changes will leave unused code etc that could be a problem. In my case I was removing my GTX gpu as well as changing motherboard, processor and memory. I uninstalled all the Nvidia stuff before upgrade. My error was letting the Gigabyte install disc load its recommended software. It installed Norton !!! Took me a while to recover from that !!!

I never use the driver CD that comes with the graphics card, I download the latest driver from nvidia and install that instead

the CD drivers are usually 5-10 versions behind

The CD was not for the graphics card it was the CD for the motherboard drivers. Won't work without them. Drivers were up to date since it is a newly released board. I don't use any GPU acceleration effects so did not bother with a graphics card at all this time. Just use the integrated one in the i7 4790K. Seems to work fine for my uses.
