  • opening previous projects in 5.01

I have had the update to 5.0 several weeks now and finally finishing up some projects in 4.6. How reliable is 5.01 in opening previous projects?

From time to time I have to go back and re edit or update a project.

    Thanks

It's very reliable. But remember that if you open it in 5.xx, you will not be able to open it again with 4.6 if you have a need to do so. You can do the usual of saving it with a different name and using that if you need to. Also if you have any Xplode effects they will have to be changed.

One thing to remember is that there is no xplode in Edius 5.

No. It is not yet reliable in opening previous projects. I continually work with archived projects created in 4.61 and earlier and have found issues of clips unregistering themselves.

After further investigation I discovered that this behaviour is identical in XP 32bit as well as Vista 64 bit. I sent a sample project on a hard drive to GV UK who confirmed the issue & they in turn sent it on to Japan. Japan have also confirmed this problem and are now in the process of fixing this problem. Apparently this fix will materialise in the form of 5.1 at some point.

Why not this - start new projects in EDIUS 5, and older projects remain in EDIUS 4.61.

Right now, on my workstation, I have EDIUS 4.61 installed in a WIN XP 32 partition, and EDIUS 5.01 installed in a WIN VISTA 64 partition. If I want to edit an older project (4.61), I boot into XP and use EDIUS 4.61.

New projects are edited using EDIUS 5.01.

That - to me - solves all the problems.

In time, when I have no more projects in EDIUS 4.6 format, then it's time to bye bye XP partition.

Until 5.1 appears, using 4.61 for these archived projects is the only viable option. Hopefully we will soon see the complete resolution of this tiresome issue once and for all in 5.1!

In general, I noticed it takes Canopus a few rounds to make their software stable. In the past, it is worse ... EDIUS version 2 was almost unusable for some parts - have to wait for EDIUS 3. Right now, I won't even consider removing EDIUS 4.61 from my system ... even though I am already running EDIUS 5.01.

I purchased Edius 4.61 at the end of it's cycle just before V5 was announced. I was entitled to a free upgrade, I did try it but there was the issue of clips being "unregistered". I guess I'll stick with 4.61 (which has numerous improvements over 3.61) until V5 becomes stable. GV shouldn't get upset that we are making comments about these issues. I know they'll fix it & perhaps a few months down the track I'll switch to V5...

                Regards Phil C.

I have two NX machines running 4.6 and after reading all of the posts I think I will just wait until this issue is fixed before going up to 5.01. We are in the process of encoding several of our projects from last year into QT files for distribution on the Internet. It would be just way too great a risk to have a problem with not opening previous projects from 4.6.

What I think I will do is to only update one machine and that will prevent any problems with our older programs.

This problem along with a smooth down convert from HD to SD from within Edius 5.x would be a great way to start the New-year.

                  Thanks for all the advice.
