  • Edius on a MAC

So, would GV/Canopus ever consider making an Apple version of Edius? Avid started on Apple, then made a PC version. I would think Making an Apple/Mac version of Edius would widen its customer base and give those of us an option who want to dump PC but rather not dump Edius in the process.

    Extremely unlikely.

Now that there is Boot Camp, the likelihood decreases even further..

and many people are already using Edius on a mac via boot camp. (with and without canopus hardware)

Is it possible to use the Canopus HQ codec in the MAC OS so we can bounce files around. This would assist me in retaining Edius in an agressive "use a MAC" environment.

Not as yet. I know the request has been raised more than once in recent times.

It's still a tricky thing. Basically the easiest solution is to wrap it in QT. That would get it into an FCP timeline, and I reckon that is probably what the majority of people need/want.

Once GV decides to fix the issues with QT and EDIUS, it should be easier :)

For now your best option is to use the Windows ProRes decoder that's available for free on Apple.com to bring your FCP exported stuff into EDIUS (Ask the other FCP editors to use ProRes for exporting).

When you want to go back to FCP, you might want to take a look at using PNG sequence (It is lossless) and export the audio separately.

What was the issue? I forgot.

I had an edit with my laptop and Edius 4.61 last night, and the FCP guy next to me made some lower-thirds in LiveType. He made a QT movie and gave me a USB stick and I placed the QT on top of my interview and I was amazed. A great animated lower third with a alpha channel. And no rendering.

Maybe I need a cheap Mac to use LiveType and then bring back into Edius vs. a Cat5 wire.

There is a luminance/chrominance shift when you use .mov files in EDIUS, regardless of the codec in the .mov wrapper.

As far as I know, LiveType templates have been abused way too much. I never used LiveType on an actual project, and I have the whole FCS2 bundle.

Personally I love Livetype I dont use the "Live Fonts" I make my own. After effects is great but if you just need a good titler nothing beats Livetype. You can get an old G4 and put in on your network and use it just for Livetype or and motion is great too plus DVDSP 4 is pretty great. Livetype wont render across the network though you need to render it to a local drive then copy it across.

HQ is a propriety format, just like ProRes :)

Apple has always been on a high horse, the chances of having such a codec created with Grass Valley are slim.

If Canopus HQ was a camera format, I'm sure it would be much easier.

In my opinion, nowadays ALL codecs should be available on both platforms. With Apples move to the Intel platform, more and more people are getting Macs into their work environment.

But that shift issue needs to be addressed ASAP. QuickTime is heavily used in the professional world.

Maybe we should license HQ and make a HQ camcorder. Or just announce it. :)
