How to control length of transition?

Hi guys... I have been watching the videos of instructions on transitions and i have read the booklet too... however i am faced wiht a problem

the instructions provided dont work for me

it says when you cut *c* a clip... and the next clip is beside it,
drag the transition to the timeline.
then hold *alt* while you drag the transition as long as you need it...

this is not working for me!
does this have to be done in multitrack?

... whether i do it on single track or multi track it seems to only let the transition last 1-2 seconds

is it more customisable?

there are a dozen ways

1. select the transition that is in between clips
2. press Alt+U and scroll the mouse wheel or type

or simply drag the edges of the transition

or Alt+click right

or press Alt+1 to add a 1 sec transition between clips at parked cursor

or press Alt+2 to add a 2 sec transition between clips at parked cursor

or press Alt+3 to add a 3 sec transition between clips at parked cursor

or press Alt+4 to add a 4 sec transition between clips at parked cursor

or preset the default transition to be the desired duration in the first place

or Ctrl+ click inside the right edge of trans and then Ctrl+click inside the left edge, then use . and , to lengthen or shorten
