This is an oldie but a "goodie". I remember running into this problem years ago, and there WAS DEFINITELY a fix ... and simple one at that if memory serves. I just can't recall what exactly it is.
I recently had to do a new OS install and had not seen this problem since my Edius 2.0 days I believe. Basically, the problem is, if Edius (or any other app utilizing the Storm hardware) is running, all external Windows' sounds (i.e. MP3s, WAVS, etc. playing in Media Player, the "ding" when Edius encounters an issue or pop-up dialogue, etc.) is all broken up with crackles and pops/popping noises.
I'm pretty sure it's some type of I/O PCI type conflict that was fixed with a simple patch or something. It's been about 4 years, so I can't recall. Is this ringing a bell with anybody? If so, PLEASE let me know what you remember. Thanks!
In the meantime I'm going to start pouring over my gobs of old notes, settings from the old HD, etc.
